Guest martin Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 I'm surprised that this is not being discussed here in MoDaCo :? http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=64335 This 3 month promotion does seem to include E-mail, WAP and internet. (not to be confused with the WAP access pack) [EDIT] No response Eh! :? Where are all those who where complaining about GPRS prices ?
Guest monsimac Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 I've been suprised that this isn't being discussed as well. When I rang orange the guy I spoke to said that it included WAP and data, upto 30Meg a month I think. When I asked him if he was sure he said he had it written in front of him in his breifing documents, mine will be enabled from my next billing date (the 3rd) so I'll let people know the following month if I've been charged.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 Mobile Email GPRS Promotion, hmmm, sounds promising. Anyone have a link about this at Orange? P
Guest fozzie Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 Yipee, just signed up  http://www.orange.co.uk/business/small/gpr...rs_mobileemail/ Checked the T&Cs and spoke with 156 and all seems straightforward. They read out the details off their screen and it clearly said it included, email, viewing web pages and WAP over GPRS :D Since my SPV Access pack runs out on 19th June I've got them to add the new promotion from that date, so I get three months of 30Mb per month GPRS for nowt! Wasn't this promotion mentioned a few days ago, but then it was only for new GPRS subs?! The T&Cs don't now say that.
Guest wilky Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 You will need to call Orange and request the "Orange Access Pack" Its supports both CSD and GPRS browsing and according to what I can find its unlimited for three months with a "fair usage policy". If you want this pack the offical line is to call 150 and request this. The offer closes on the 31/5/03 (unless its extended). If you want more details call 150 from your Orange phone (good luck with the IVR a pet peeve of mine!) and get more info from the CSR on the other end. £4 a month it`ll cost you. Andy If you want to connect via a laptop or pda you will need a standard gprs bundle.
Guest fozzie Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 hmmm, Andy, I think that's a bit of a poisson rouge - that is not the same promotion. We're talking here about the Mobile Email GPRS free promotion which is FREE  The fair use policy states a limit of 30Mb per month and is setup with 156 and not 150. You have until the 31 July 2003 to sign up.
Guest martin Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 Its the mobile E-mail promption and not the Open Access ( WAP) promortion. CS should confirm E-mail, WAP & Internet for you. Mobile E-mail is a promotion for PDA/mobile setups to encourage GPRS usage inclusing E-mail. Obviously very compatible with us SPV users. Be there or be square.
Guest fozzie Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 Martin, thanks for starting this thread off and bringing this to our attention  I'm certain that it has been mentioned here before (last week?) but it was only for new customers/connections. I'm sure it had the same name too - hence the initial lack of interest. If it is as 156 confirm it is, then good work batman :D (100 views so far which means CS can expect at least an additional 100 calls this lunchtime - they'll wonder what the sudden demand is all about!)
Guest wilky Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 Ahh sorry mate my bad. Didn`t read the email through properly. Off the 156 to sign up for it myself now !!
Guest martin Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 I'm certain that it has been mentioned here before (last week?) but it was only for new customers/connections. I'm sure it had the same name too - hence the initial lack of interest.I think you must presently be on a GPRS access pack before you can sign up therefore it may only work when you have officially finished your existing promotion ? Those who have successfully requested this promotion may be able to answer this. Mobile Email GPRS Promotion, hmmm, sounds promising. Anyone have a link about this at Orange? I don't think you'll find these specific details on their internet site. I suspect that only CS will give you this - IF you request it.
Guest fozzie Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 My SPV Access Pack runs out on 19th June. They said they could start the promotion now if I wanted but I chose to have it start on the 19th. That way it gives me an extra 3 weeks of 10Mb capped access (although I don't know of anybody that has been capped?)
Guest davy Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 Am I missing something here? Went to the link given in fozzie's post and read the T&C's of this promotion. I quote:- "The Promotion can only be used for the sending and receiving of email using GPRS and cannot be used for data calls which use circuit switched data transfer method".
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 From what it says it seems you can only use the GPRS when using the phone as a USB modem, not for general GPRS usage...
Guest mattat Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 That was my reading of the promotion as well, especially as if you go to the sign up online, it has lots of checks about you having a compatible laptop/PDA, with set up options. However can they tell the difference?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 No idea, but at £4 for 2meg then £84 for the other 28meg, would you want to risk it if it wasn't?
Guest youngerpants Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 Just looked into this in the T&C's, website 150 & 156 This pack really does only extent to users using their phone as a modem via a laptop or PDA. In other words, if you travel with a laptop a lot, go get it, if you use your SPV as a seperate mobile email account etc, dont bother it wont count
Guest martin Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 I suppose someone could pay the Orange shop a visit - maybe they have been fully briefed on the promotion.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 But as far as the network is concerned there is no difference? :-/ P
Guest youngerpants Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 thats what I thought... how can they tell... IP is IP at the end of the day; ports? packet sniffing? Packet Sigs (hope not!!!! not very nice if they do)? but as mono said, "but at £4 for 2meg then £84 for the other 28meg, would you want to risk it if it wasn't"
Guest fozzie Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 Exactly. The data is all going through the APN orangeinternet, whether it is sourced from the SPV or a connected laptop etc. I cannot see how you could have two GPRS bundles on your account - one for data coming from the SPV and another bundle for data coming through the SPV. It just don't work like that ?!?! Anyway, it's free and it starts for me at the end of my SPV promo access pack so I've nothing to lose
Guest Bazz Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 It's only available for the top 20 ISPs. Maybe they limit your GPRS address list to the pop3 servers for these providers meaning you can't surf other websites.
Guest fozzie Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 hmm, not sure of the link between pop3 servers and webpages? I suppose it's theoretically possible to limit web browsing to certain domains only but I really can't see Orange doing that. What would be the point?
Guest Bazz Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 Presumably this will go through an Orange Internet proxy so they could only give access to a limited number of servers on this proxy (e.g. pop3.freeserve.co.uk). Why? So that you only use this for e-mail rather than as a cheeky way to extend the cheap GPRS promotion. As I say I'm just guessing so this could all be wrong.
Guest fozzie Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 Understood, but 156 have already said that the promo pack gives access to Web pages and Wap pages as well as email. Like I say, although technically possible to limit access to certain domain names I don't think this is practicable. Historically (with WAP for instance) you either had access just to the Orange WAP services or you had full external access. There was no halfway house where you could visit some domains but not others. Certainly the people on uk.telecom.mobile that have already signed up to and are on this pack, have not reported any restrictions on web browsing. The other point is that I don't see any way that Orange could handle you having two different GPRS packs on your account; both for the APN orangeinternet; one of them clocking up access to certain pop3/smtp servers and certain domain names when http & wml browsing and the other pack clocking up all other data access. They struggle to get it right with a single access pack! They'd tilt with this scenario
Guest Bazz Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 OK didn't realise it gave you web aswell - I thought it was advertised as an e-mail only service.
