Guest Emissary Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 Hello, Not long ago we were making wish lists for software we'd like to see on our smartphones. I'd really like to see Real One or some version of Real Player to compliment the Windows Media player. I was wondering if enough people are interested could we get a list of interested parties and post to the Real Networks people to let them know there's enough interest to make it worth their while ? Good idea ? How long should we collect names ? Is registering interst on this thread the best way to do it? RealOne Mobile
Guest midnight Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 Spyware on the phone????? no thanks
Guest Brody Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 I agree with Midnight, Real suck!! Spyware sucks!!
Guest meaks Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 Well I have a couple of south park episodes in real format so I wouldnt mind a player 8)
Guest ClintEastman Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 this might interest the people that don't install real products on their PC's Real Alternative will allow you to play Real (.ra .ram) files. This way there is no need to install the offical RealOne player. The included Media Player Classic works very well with Real Files. Features: - Media Player Classic 6.4.4.9 - RealMedia codecs[EDIT] Looks like real have spotted that codec!! To whom it may concern, It has come to our attention that SoftwareNews.RO is hosting and distributing Real Alternative 0.90.RC which is illegal software that infringes RealNetworks Inc. proprietary technology. This email is to put you on notice that you must immediately cease and desist all distribution of the Real Alternative 0.90.RC. The Real Alternative 0.90.RC is pirated software that infringes RealNetworks Patents, Copyright, and Trademarks. Please take this software down immediately. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at the number below. Our thanks in advance for your assistance on this matter. Best regards, David David A. QuickTime Alternative will allow you to play QuickTime (.mov .qt) files. This way there is no need to install the offical QuickTime player. As a bonus, Internet Explorer will play all QuickTime movies that are embedded in a webpage. You do need a player that is capable of handling QuickTime movies. The included Media Player Classic works very well with QuickTime. Features: - Media Player Classic [version 6.4.4.2]- QuickTime codecs [version 6.1.0.16] - QuickTime Internet Explorer plugin [version 6.1.0.16] Go Get It
Guest Vector Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 You can listen to Radio 1 etc. with Real one tho...
Guest midnight Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 hehe, streaming audio on spv???? dont make me laugh
Guest Vector Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 Cool, thanks Clint, i've never seen that
Guest Mr_Protozoa Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 yey! real files without all the junk! So the only good thing said about real player was the ability to listen to radio 1? Firstly radio1 is crap 90% of the time, but if you really want to listen to it turn on your actual radio and save yourself some bandwidth!
Guest HelloDave Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 Thanks for the links Clint - i've wanted a replacement for the absolutely sh*te Quicktime software for ages! What possessed (cr)Apple to make a media player that people force you to use which nags you everytime you run it and can't even do full screen video (not in my version anyway) I will never know! I use Real Player 8, and although I hate it, you can at least get rid of most of the nags and view full screen video! Wouldn't touch RealOne though  I can see the news now - "RealOne SP 2002; now we know where you are, who you call, and when you call them" Features - adds 1125 "RealMedia premium phone numbers" to your SPV address book, RealAnnoyingMessages, RealCr*pPopups and ReallyNoseySpyware will be installed into your startup folder (cannot be disabled and will use at least 50% of your phone's CPU cycles at all times) and RealBoringWallpaper will be added as your default homescreen. RealOne SP will download a "Clip of the day" to your phone every 24 hours and will also need to "phone home" every 30 minutes to "check for updates". This will require 2mb of GPRS data each day, but can disabled if you purchase our premium service at only £35 per month. As you might have guessed, I'm not really fussed about RealOne for SmartPhone  Think about it - you can install a firewall on your PC, but what's to stop any program using an expensive GPRS connection on SmartPhone?
Guest urdone311 Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 Spyware on the phone????? no thanks  How could the spyware get any worse? Have we forgotten our phones are running on MICROSOFT!?
Guest meaks Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 Midnight: It takes about 30mins per file to convert it to avi. I'm too lazy
Guest Emissary Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 Hello again, I didn't really anticipate all the negative feedback. I've grown to live with spyware... You can turn off most of the spyware features under preferences | network. Anything that starts "Send..." is usually a good bet. The adverts can be a bit intrusive, however since I tooking internet gambling, started investing my winnings on the stock market and joined the US military "Go Army!". I find they just compliment my lifestyle choices. On the plus side. There's an awful lot of stuff out there in Real format. The BBC services, internet radio (I know about the current streaming difficulties...) and video. So a player (any player) that could run on our phones and play the format would be a good thing. Didn't they go open source recently (Helix) ? Maybe someone will do a smartphone app without the adverts. One other point. We only have a little screen, how much could they pop up? I could be tempting fate here.
Guest ClintEastman Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 I've grown to live with spyware...Well i pity you then. As for Open source. Guest Rob.P Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 REal is banned on our work network, the Sysadmin guy has locked the firewall to all common Real ports, the reason being spyware. Which is fair enough.
Guest Emad Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 :-p Silly Real. I love Media Player Classic and its brand new codec.. Teehee.. You can actually get winamp to play them too if you look around
Guest kulepoy Posted July 14, 2003 Report Posted July 14, 2003 how can i convert real media to .avi??
Guest morpheus2702 Posted July 14, 2003 Report Posted July 14, 2003 Sorry, just way too many memories of Real Player crashing my PC and littering it with crappy add-ins that took ages to remove. Real One? I'd rather have Harold Shipman take my temperature.
