Guest dannybrookes Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 Hey, Ive lost my phone charger and i dont wanna pay for a new one  Ive seen the page for modifying the usb cradle so it charges the phone (http://w3.ridingzone.com/jc/usb.htm) but the link is down  does anyone know any other links on how to do it? CHEERS :D
Guest dannybrookes Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 I used yahoo cache to get the webpage  cheers anyway tho
Guest dannybrookes Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 sorry, not i cant see the pictures because yahoo aint cached em  sorry, still need help :D  thanks
Guest vijay555 Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 mate, it's a doddle. from memory: open cradle tin some thin wire, about 2 cm. solder to big red (positive) wire. solder other end to pin 5 marked on the phone connector (try positioning out first, since there isn't much room for lots of loose wire) Check carefully. it's easy for solder to spill over pin 5. Tip: use a 1mm tip or less. melt some solder on the end. TOUCH pin 5, hopefully leaving a tiny drop of solder on there. (practise by chipping XBOXs!) Tin the wire you've soldered to red, and then solder to pin 5. It's really ridiculously easy. Hope it helps, and do check the pictures, but as i remember, that's all right. V oh, and remove the dc in from the cradle. just pull the Adaptor socket out of position and leave it loose in the cradle when you reassemble, so you're not tempted to plug in the adapator whilst connected to USB. Guest dannybrookes Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 cheers mate YOU ARE a lifesaver ie ive just been offered a job starting tomorow, and i need my phone :)
Guest vijay555 Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 Hey danny, feel free to spread some of that new job joy my way as well then! have to save for my tanager  Good luck (with the job!) oh, and if you do(or don't!) fry the phone, do post to confirm. i think i've got the pics at home, but the translated description makes it sound even harder then it is! It is easy... V
Guest honmunho Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 Hi to all. The link is here as I was able to see, let me know if otherwise. http://www.smartphonefrance.info/usb.asp Have fun.
Guest hk Posted September 2, 2003 Report Posted September 2, 2003 Many thanks, I am off to the lab to do this mod now :)
Guest vijay555 Posted September 2, 2003 Report Posted September 2, 2003 Hark at me, what a penile extension! To correct myself as to this being "easy", although it is very easy, i managed to toast my e100 cradle by fudging the soldering. I suggest you use very thin wire, and a very thin tip soldering iron. I managed to bridge the pins on the circuit board, and it proved impossible to remove the solder, and i just got myself into a bigger hole... eventually having to trash the hole cradle. My best advice: if your a serious DIYer, invest in some silver paint/pen... then paint onto the circuit board a tiny connection from pin 5 to a new pad (that you make), and solder to the new pad. this will give you ample room away from pin 5 to solder onto. Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 2, 2003 Report Posted September 2, 2003 Also be carefull as not only killing your cradle you can kill your USB on the PC. I used telephone wire as it's easy to form being single strand.
Guest hk Posted September 2, 2003 Report Posted September 2, 2003 Finished the mod 5 mins after posting, real easy to do, used a bit of old IDE cable. Have a really small soldering iron tip for soldering surface mount components (and am well practised at it). Really was a piece of cake. EDIT: Oh and I added a nice little blooo LED to replace the intake for the charger. Didnt want the DC connector left there incase I fried stuff, and wanted to fill the space. My cradle gives off a purdy bloo glow now :)
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 2, 2003 Report Posted September 2, 2003 Oh and I added a nice little blooo LED to replace the intake for the charger. Didnt want the DC connector left there incase I fried stuff, I tucked the socket inside to prevent plugging the charger in, not that I would.
Guest hk Posted September 2, 2003 Report Posted September 2, 2003 Yeah thats why I got rid of it, but its shiny-er with the bloo led :)
Guest m4rcus Posted October 2, 2003 Report Posted October 2, 2003 erm, it says to link to pin 5... so am I right in assuming that the numbering on the pcb is no that same as the convention found on Mini USB TYPE B where the page states the usb pin 5 is GND... but pin 1 is +5 Cheers
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted October 2, 2003 Report Posted October 2, 2003 Nope you need pin 5 on the board as the pictures show HERE
