Guest rnewtonjr Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 Now that I have my SPV connecting to either the VoiceStream or AT&T network, I want to setup GPRS. I have loaded the configurations for both AT&T and T-Mobile (T-Zones, option 1 & 2), but I keep getting "Cannot place the call". I put in a T-Mobile SIM and all is OK on Voicestream. Any idea why GPRS would not work with the Orange SIM?

I have loaded the configurations for both AT&T and T-Mobile (T-Zones, option 1 & 2), but I keep getting "Cannot place the call".Firstly have the US network providers activated all APN's for you ? This is roughly how I would try to setup and test the GPRS connections. Setting- Data connections Create proxy connection for WAP. Create GPRS connections for GPRS WEB, GPRS WAP, GPRS MMS Make data connections, Internet=(GPRS WEB) , WAP=(GPRS WAP) Settings - Acccessories - MMS setup Add MMS data to GPRS MMS. Check GPRS APN's (use menu-refresh to re-load page if needed) Int.Explorer - de-tick 'auto' and make Select network=The Internet. Successfully access http://www.google.com/wml site and use properties to comfirm Type=WML and protocol=HTTP Int.Explorer- de-tick 'auto' and make Select network=WAP Network Successfully access wsp://www.google.com/wml site and use properties to comfirm Type=WML and protocol=WSP Int.Explorer - tick 'auto detect settings' to allow either protocol to be used. Attempt to send an MMS to yourself and to an E-mail address. I put in a T-Mobile SIM and all is OK on Voicestream. What do you mean by "All is OK" ? Any idea why GPRS would not work with the Orange SIM? If you were to use the Orange SIM then you would be roaming onto the US networks. Have Orange activated GPRS roaming on you SIM, also I am not sure which US networks that Orange have GPRS roaming agreements with. It would be very expensive so you might be better sticking with the US networks own SIM. Note: You would need to have GPRS settings for all three network in your phone (for all 3 SIMS) unless you are to use a networks GPRS roaming agreement.
Guest rnewtonjr Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 >Firstly have the US network providers activated all APN's for you ? I am not sure what you mean? Do I need to call Orange and ask them to have T-Mobile/AT&T activate APNs? >>I put in a T-Mobile SIM and all is OK on Voicestream. >What do you mean by "All is OK" ? If I put the T-Mobile SIM in I am able to use Voice and Data services - it is using the T-Mobile GPRS connection I configured. Roaming is on my Orange card and working, because I was able to make voice calls in the US. I would love to use the T-Mobile SIM, but its not mine (its borrowed) - I will need to use the Orange one in the US.
Guest nobznss Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 Try going here: http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php...t=gprs+settings All the settings are here. I used them and my GPRS works perfectly. Hope this helps.

Have you though about pre-pay SIMS ? Roaming is on my Orange card and working, because I was able to make voice calls in the US. I would love to use the T-Mobile SIM, but its not mine (its borrowed) - I will need to use the Orange one in the US. There is a difference between roaming on the GSM network and GPRS network. Orange will activate GPRS roaming seperately. I'm not sure that Orange can use GPRS roaming in the US. see hear http://www.orange.co.uk/services/orange_gp...gprs_table.html
Guest rnewtonjr Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 I justed called Orange and they said they do not have data services in the US (no GPRS or WAP). I assume it won't work then with the Orange SIM at all. Has this been everyone's experience?
Guest martin Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 I assume that you bought the SPV on an Orange Contract. Roaming on the US GSM (and if available) GPRS networks would prove to be very expensive. Best bet would be to get a US contract or prepay SIM. Are you tied-in with Orange ?
Guest rnewtonjr Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 Yep. Are there any other providers in the UK that sell this or a similar SmartPhone (I realize the phone says Orange on it, so I assume O2 does not sell this phone with a contract). I will only be using it in the US while visiting (one week every month or 2).
Guest martin Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 I think you can but the SPV phone (prepay) for approx £200 now I think. Or how about the SPVx/Tanager from Alien Wireless. http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php...highlight=alien Depending on how long you have had the phone, you may be able to buy your SPV outright from Orange by paying up the rest of the agreed term. It all depends on what you wan't to do. I would put a US (GPRS enabled) pre-pay SIM in the phone for that one week and then using an unconditional divert, leave an answering message on your orange VPS saying that you can be contacted in the states on x number.
