'unable to place call' (net error)

Hi,

I bought my SPV from an Orange store a few days ago, and so far ive been unable to connect to the internet (either on the phone itself, or by using the phone with my laptop). I also haven't been able to use e-mail or 'orange update' either. I just get the 'unable to place call error' whenever i try to use IE...

Now whilst being technically-minded, i'm new to all of this 'gprs' and wap stuff - my last phone was a C12 savy  , so it's a big jump for me.

I've done everything in the manual, spent about an hour and a half talking to Orange customer-services about it (they updated my settings remotely, then after that didnt work, we went through all of the settings manually), and still no joy.

It's not a signal problem - I've tried to connect in various places including Somerset, Bristol, and Reading - all to no avail. :D

Gprs was definately activated when i bought the phone, so i cant c y im having problems...

i believe it might be to do with my settings, but it's more likely something at Orange's end, since they've set the phone up themselves and it still aint working...

i'd appreciate any help you can offer.

thx

Starting from the very begining, I assume you are on contract.

You should have a top centre G displayed when the phone is switched on.

(forgetting wap/mms settings for the moment)

Settings- data connections - edit GPRS connection

[Description: Orange GPRS

Connects to: The Internet

Access point: orangeinternet

User name: (blank)

Password: (blank)

Primary DNS: 0.0.0.0

Secondary DNS: 0.0.0.0

IP address: (blank)

Setting - data connections

Internet connection: Orange GPRS

In Internet explorer - Menu - Options - Connections

Untick 'auto detect settings' and make Select Network: The Internet.

Try to connect to an address using http. i.e http://www.modaco.com/mobile.

If this fails to connect then there's no point going any further.

Get onto Orange CS and as them to re-activate GPRS with Internet, WAP and MMS services.

Tried a hard reset?

My GPRS died after doing a hard reset once, fixed it with a second...

this has been covered ALOT of times! for some reason you will get phone that will not connect ot GPRS. there seem to be numerous suggestions as the fault. hve a search for 'GPRS problem' or 'unable to place call'

I'm sorry - i should have come back to this post and stated what i did to fix it... my bad

after many, many calls to OrangeCS, i finally got them to put the query thorugh to OrangeTS (tech services)...

it turned out that the problem was indeed at their end - they had not set up my grps service correctly and as a result i was not able to connect. They managed to correct this a few days later and i am now using gprs regularly (although it's almost cetainly costing me a small fortune  ).

Ring up Orange CS (07973 100 156), tell them the prob, and ask them to get OrangeTS on it - i'm sure it'll be an error on their part which they should be able to fix soon.

This is not an isolated problem - i have talked to Orange staff and other customers instore and many with spvs (and other phones) have the same issue.
