Guest nobznss Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 I may be opening a HUGE can, but a friend is thinking about getting an XDA, and I'm trying to convince him to get a SPV. Which one is better in your opinion? Thanks!
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 It depends does he want a PDA that has phone funtions or does he want a phone with some PDA options? Both of them have good bad points but if the phone comes first then it's SPV all the way
Guest mores Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 does he have a PDA right now? because if he doesn't, i would suggest he'd get a smartphone. it'll be able to do a lot of things the XDA can, without the added weight and size. if he realizes, after a few months, that the PDA functions of his smartphone do not suffice, he could get a real PDA as a second device, or sell his smartphone and get an XDA then. the problem with the XDA is, you'll ALWAYS need to carry that thing around with you. PDA + SPV are an ideal combination, since you use your SPV as a phone, most of the time, and do PIM stuff with the PDA. But if you happen to be out and about, you still have the power of your PDA inside that little SPV. ok, that's all theoretic talk as i currently don't have an SPV. but that's how i expect it to be once i get mine. i think it'll look good with my pocket loox.
Guest nobznss Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 Well, I know he likes the idea of being able to play DivX's on his phone, but I think he may want a touch screen. I don't know very much about XDA's, but I'm telling him all sorts of stuff that they can't do that the SPV can like playing MP3's (although I think XDA's can do that too) and of course watching movies and streaming audio, etc. What I'm hoping to do is just have him read everything that is posted here to convince him the SPV is the way to go! I sure think it is!
Guest Chronos Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 I have an XDA (T-Mobile PPC Phone Edition here in the good ol' USA- an XDA w/ a titanium finish) and have a Tanager on the way. I'll use both. For PDA usage, the XDA cannot be beat. It is essentially my mobile office. With its built in Terminal Server app, my external keyboard, and built-in mini office apps, I can accomplish nearly everything I use my big laptop for. I use NYDITOT to rotate the screen to landscape mode when surfing the web- pretty decent way to surf- and probably nicer than with the Tanager. For the times when I prefer to take a smaller phone with me, the Tanager will do fine. As stated before, it really depends on your friend's needs. If PDA usage is the highest requirement, get the XDA. If cell phone usage with minimal PDA usage is highest, get the Tanager or Canary.
