Guest v_patel1 Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 hi i have an SPV but... seeing as 3G have got this offer on Half Price Handsets with no linerental should i get one, which one is better?
Guest fozzie Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 No comparison. It's like asking which are best, trains or planes?! It depends what you want, what you like, what you can afford etc etc. Have a look in Off Topic Chat. There's a few threads about 3G handsets. For the record, I've got both and hardly use one of them at all - guess which one :?: :!:
Guest v_patel1 Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 so basically your saying the SPV is better, which one have you got? wht type of software can u get for it?
Guest fozzie Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 I've got the NEC e606 and it does nothing at all that I can't already do on my SPV. In fact, even the things it does do, it does very badly! You can't get or run any software on it :!: You can't browse the web with it :!: You can't use it as a modem for data :!: You can't sync it with Outlook :!: It doesn't hold enough charge to last a day :!: It doesn't handle cell handovers well, resulting in dropped calls :!: hmmmm, all fairly basic things for a modern day mobile phone!
Guest mores Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 current 3g devices just have something cheap and crappy about them. i went to a local "3" shop and played around with one of the handsets. first of all, the clerk told me he needs two (2) charges a day for normal use. then there's the strange "operating system". somehow, i don't ever want to own a phone with a proprietary operating system. windows smartphone / symbian series 60 or UIQ, all can be enhanced with freeware/shareware programs. and this is something i look for in a phone, nowadays. i have had my eyes on a 3rd generation cellphone too, but i have come to realize that they're just not ready yet. only when prices drop (they cost as much as a new top-end PDA) and devices reach the quality of current 2.5g phones will i switch.
Guest v_patel1 Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 thnx guys, i think you boys have put me off it, looks like its a good thing. Im quite happy i didnt go in and buy one now.
Guest fozzie Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 And the only reason I've got one (two actually) is because I got them on a promotion through a colleague for free unlimited use for a couple of months. I soon stopped using the 3 Services and to be honest, it's even a fag carrying it around just for the free calls! The UI is absolutely dreadful. As soon as the freebie period ends they'll be going straight back. Long live the SPV (and of course its' relatives - when's that Mitac out?)
Guest amo Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 Short answer....spv. have experience with both (3g and spv) and its no competition. Its like saying which one, PC or an etch a scetch
Guest kingdom master Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 one thing i will give 3 handsets im using the motorola one to connect ot my laptop as a modem, and im getting speeds of 128kprs average. kingdom
Guest Will Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 so the one that does not support video calling, but can act as a modem.. cool.. are they still 125quid? or can you do a modaco deal mate? Will
Guest mores Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 i'm actually thinking of signing a contract with "3" sometime soon. but mostly because i want to see what it can do, how i can develop applications for it (or better, "let develop" since i can't program java or whatever). since i'm in the midst of starting up a multimedia company it'll be part of the "research" account  what is currently disturbing me is that there is supposed to be no browser on there.
Guest kingdom master Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 THE 3G motorola is 125, i can do some better deals on them phones if anyone is interested? but yeh the handset is great for a modem, it doesnt do video calls however therei s a new motorola handset due in november which does all that this one does and video calls, but i will say that the motorola video capture or calls is nowhere near the quality of the nec 606 or 808. at the moment the handsets are non development based, basically we cant put anything on them. but! a smartphone and palm baed unit is coming out next yearhopefully early next year but im told they wont release it until they release the sim lock for the web access. which strangley enough if you use a non premium number to dial up ur access. you can use ur free minutes to surf. this also goes for using the phones as modems and direct handset access. the handsets are clocking at 400kprs and the handsets being linked as modems are surfing at 128kprs but im also told this will greatly improve as there only using 1/10th of the network compacity. kingdom
Guest fozzie Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 What are 3 charging for web surfing? I can't see anything in their tariffs about data - it's all structured around billing per event?
Guest Brody Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 They don't offer it do they?? Not on the phone anyway, the phone'll work like a modem tho just like the SPV!
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 what is currently disturbing me is that there is supposed to be no browser on there. Only access to the 3 "portal". You don't get full html access in the same way SmartPhone offers, mores the pity.
Guest fozzie Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 They don't offer it do they?? Not on the phone anyway, the phone'll work like a modem tho just like the SPV! That's what I thought. I've successfully made 3G connections using my NEC e606 as a modem but then couldn't do anything with it - couldn't even ping any IP addresses. Is there a 'secret' setting I need to know?
Guest kingdom master Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 the 3g network has no data tariff but as i said if you use a non premium number as ur dial up then it'll come out of ur free minutes kingdom
Guest fozzie Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 Well yeah, but I think you'll find that's only a circuit switched connection - it's not a 'always on' packet connection. What you're doing is the same as using a dialup connection on the SPV instead of a GPRS connection (using *99#). You are not making use of the additional bandwidth that the 3G network can offer. :? So agreed, you are using the 3G phone as a modem; I can do the same with the NEC e606. What you are not doing is using the network in packet mode and therefore exploiting the faster speeds etc that it has to offer.
Guest kingdom master Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 well, considering that 3 are stating u can only get speeds of upto 128kprs out of the handset when used as a modem, and 400kprs when the net access is unlocked. and at the moment im using it as a modem for my laptop for when i travel for business. 128kprs is not only faster than gprs it IS using the network capacity at the moment. rather than the limits of gprs. plus! i dont pay for the access as it comes out of my free networks minutes on the kit tariff. what i have found out if anyone can retrieve the sim and phone unlock codes or develop a way of unlock the net access restriction, the network will allow u to surf however there is no set tarriff so billing is a mystery.
