Guest Paul [MVP] Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 Appforge have confirmed to me in an e-mail that they have no plans to support the Microsoft SmartPhone platform, despite currently supporting Pocket PC, Palm and Quartz UIQ (P800). Appforge is a popular development environment for mobile devices, based around Visual Basic 6, and with a wealth of custom controls, called 'Ingots'. You can read more about Appforge, at the Appforge Homepage. P
Guest spacemonkey Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 I can see why appforge may say this. They've got a toolset and controls and everything for application development, but they currently all run on platforms that have a stylus. The move from stylus based systems to non stylus systems is a major one and it's definitely not a write once run anywhere scenario (which I'd hope their current platform is) since theirs fundamental User Interface differences that need to be dealt with... Smartphone 2002 is much more compatible with J2ME style approaches which are already used to running on devices that don't have a stylus... at the end of the day, all we need is a good set of standard controls and interface elements... maybe CE.NET would be good? Come on microsoft, give us some of that good .net loving.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 .NET is on the way, and would indeed make appforge pretty redundant. I still think they're missing a trick tho, there's a lot of competent VB6 developers out there that would like to write for SmartPhone! P
Guest Brody Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 I agree having just learnt VB6 at uni!! Bring on .NET i suppose!!
