Guest Paul [MVP] Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 Australia's 'Optus' network have today announced that they are to release the Qtek 7070 handset (a.k.a. HTC Tanager) on their network, in a bid to stimulate data usage on their network. To help them in this strategy, they have also reduced their GPRS pricing to half a cent (about 0.2 pence) per kilobyte. Interestingly, this marks the first territory where another operator has stolen a lead on Orange with releasing a Microsoft Smartphone based handset - Orange Australia do not currently offer the SPV. P
Guest mr Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 Hey guys, Orange doesn't own the Orange network in Australia - they just buy the brand! Bizarre eh? M.
Guest futaris Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 There aren't many details on pricing yet - just that the phone would become available in June at a cost of AU$99 on a AU$99 a month plan. But here are some links with more details: http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2003/06/...4406171066.html http://www.computerworld.com.au/index.php?...26&fp=16&fpid=0 http://www.zdnet.com.au/newstech/communica...20275043,00.htm http://news.zdnet.co.uk/story/0,,t269-s2135493,00.html
Guest Kins Posted June 22, 2003 Report Posted June 22, 2003 Hi Guys, I knew I could relie on this site to come up with the goods. I've a friend in Oz who is desperate to get hold off an SPV. So I emailed Oz customer and this was the answer that came back to me: "Orange Australia does not have any affiliation with Orange UK, therefore any changes on the UK network will not reflect any changes here in Australia. The Orange network in the UK utilises a GSM network and in Australia we use a CDMA network. The SPV Smartphone is designed to be used on a GSM network therefore is not compatable on the CDMA network. " This will probably expalin why Optus have been able to steal the March. I'll be sending the info from the site to my friend, I'll let you know the outcome. Keep up the good work Gareth
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted June 22, 2003 Report Posted June 22, 2003 That does mean the Samsung i600 should work on O Oz (it's CDMA)... P
Guest futaris Posted June 23, 2003 Report Posted June 23, 2003 There are two 2G CDMA networks here. Orange and Telstra... AFAIK, the Samsung i600 isn't certified on either of them. So, it might be hard to get the phone registered on a network. Course, you should be able to roam on the CDMA network easily enough.
Guest jenneth Posted June 23, 2003 Report Posted June 23, 2003 I currently have a Qtek 7070 on loan from Optus for review in an Australian tech publication - I like it so much more than my SPV. Wondering if I can slip my SPV into the box when I return it and just hold on to the Qtek .. hehe, dream on. I like how Optus has reduced the cost per kilobyte for GPRS to half a cent - currently paying 4 times that on Vodafone! May have to switch to Optus when my contract expires ..
Guest Kins Posted June 23, 2003 Report Posted June 23, 2003 Hi I'm sure they wont mind if put your spv in the box and hand that back to them. So how much better is the Qtek7070 then the SPV, I thought there one and the same thing? Should I wait until you publish in the Australian tech? Regards
Guest triplej Posted July 15, 2003 Report Posted July 15, 2003 Hi Just to let you know I picked up the 7070 from Harvey Norman for $890.00 and am using my own plan. Have configured GPRS OK and everything seems to be working fine. The issues I'm having is that Optus don't supply any accessories yet nor do Harvey Norman and support / service for this phone is practically non-existent. TripleJ
Guest Firaas Posted July 15, 2003 Report Posted July 15, 2003 Hi  I'm sure they wont mind if put your spv in the box and hand that back to them.  So how much better is the Qtek7070 then the SPV, I thought there one and the same thing?  Should I wait until you publish in the Australian tech?  Regards The Qtek 7070 (AKA Tanager) has a better screen, a joystick and an easier-to-use keypad.
Guest ozute Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 I too bought the Qtek 7070 outright, and paid $820 for it. The retail price is $889, although it's currently advertised at Ryda for $789!! I'm having the same problem as 'triple j', I can't find anywhere that have any accessories at all!! There's no USB cradles, headsets, cases or anything available!
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted July 25, 2003 Report Posted July 25, 2003 Don't worry ozute, you'll be able to buy them here soon :) P
Guest ozute Posted July 27, 2003 Report Posted July 27, 2003 G'day Paul, Do you know if we're going to be able to upgrade the Qtek 7070 to MS Mobile 2003? Hope so :)
Guest Turok Posted July 27, 2003 Report Posted July 27, 2003 That would be great if we could upgrade to ms 2003....I have recently changed from having the Ipaq H3870, to Palm Tungsten |T and then Treo270....its great...
Guest mike_secco Posted August 20, 2003 Report Posted August 20, 2003 Hi, I am thinking og getting the Qtek 7070 smartphone on a $33 plan with optus and pay an extra $22 each month for 24 months for the phone. But before I do does anyone know if the Qtek mobiles are application locked? Does the Qtek come with earphones to listen to music? Can you give me any other advice? It would be much appreciated if someone can answer my questions From Mike
Guest ozute Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 G'day Mice_Secco, I bought the Qtek 7070 outright for $820 about 2 months ago, and took it back for a refund about 3 weeks ago! The phones don't come application locked from memory... There were no earphones in the package that me or a friend purchased, but that may have changed. I bought a 256MB SD card for the phone, and downloaded some games and utilities onto the card, but the phone seemed to have problems reading the card sometimes after rebooting, which was a pain in the butt because I'd have to reboot again. My personal opinion: great concept, but a lot of refining to go before it will be acceptable in my books. Just like a pc, it crashed, had to be rebooted, gave/had error problems and a dreadful ringtone ability. While playing Tennis Addict, the hourglass would come up in the middle of the screen and I lost all control of the phone, and the only way to stop it was to take the battery out. Out of 10, overall, I would give the phone a 3, and am much happier with my Nokia 8310! While they can't be compared, the speed and ease of use of the Nokia beats the Qtek hands down. I had read some posts about new upcoming models that had faster chips etc, so perhaps things will change, but no for the moment. Good luck, and if you do decide to get one, PLEASE make sure that you can get a refund or another phone if you aren't happy with it, so you don't get stuck!!!! Regards, OzUte
Guest jenneth Posted August 21, 2003 Report Posted August 21, 2003 I got mine about a month ago - Optus Business Edge $99 plan and got the phone for $99. Didn't come with any accessories other than the sync cable and charger. And doesn't come application locked. This is my second MS Smartphone, having come with an Orange SPV - and I love it. ozute, sorry to hear about your bad experiences. What SD card did you buy for the phone? Sandisk SD cards are notorious for developing faults, so if your card was Sandisk, then this is a problem with the card rather than the phone. Some cards also have a slow speed, and may therefore need some time to initialise. I'm using a SimpleTech 256MB SD card with no problems. Your other problems also seem to be related to applications rather than the phone itself. Yes, it could be faster, though if you install the latest Qtek 1.5 update, I hear that it's noticeably quicker. I haven't installed this myself as I'm happy with the speed of the phone and don't want to have to reinstall everything from scratch. mike_secco - if you plan on using GPRS a lot, if you're going on a Business Edge plan, make sure you specify that you want the wireless plan that charges you .55c per kb for the first $55, .44c per kb from $55-100 and then .33c thereafter. You should also get 2 months of free unlimited GPRS when you sign up (again, that's only with a Business Edge plan). I've had no problem getting additional accessories, but have gotten them all online. Currently have a BoxWave miniSync sync and charge retractable cable, Piel Frama leather case, Elektek soft fabric keyboard and 256MB SD card, as well as the handsfree kit that came with my Orange SPV.
