Guest Paul [MVP] Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 Traffic-i, the road warriors friend, is coming to SmartPhone! Traffic-i shows live traffic information, based on 'Trafficmaster' data, covering in excess of 8,000 miles of motorways and trunk roads in a clear graphical form. - Access live traffic information within seconds - Live traffic updates direct from the Trafficmaster network - Displays congestion in speed or delay - Uses GPRS for outstanding performance - Supports all UK mobile phone networks The product currently supports the SE P800, but is expected to hit SmartPhone in Q3, 2003! Guest Gorskar Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 Cool! Sounds like an extremely useful piece of software You're getting extremely fast at finding out news Paul - the rest of us have to work quite hard to find something before you do
Guest Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 Can't wait for this, I'd seen it for P800 and thought it looked great. Another plus for the SPV.
Guest Tallguy Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 This sounds great. I've just ordered my SPV today - how will I activate the service? WIll I need to load software into the phone and how much will it all cost??? 8)
Guest meaks Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 Seems like it could be bloody expensive if it uses GPRS - might risk the traffic jam
Guest martin Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 A quote from the www.traffic-i.com FAQ Obviously the size of data transmitted varies depending upon the traffic conditions when you connect, but to give you an idea, the usage would range from a light user who uses the service 16 times a month to a heavy user who uses the service about 200 times a month. The light user would use about 75kb of data and the heavy user about 500kb. Charges are dependant upon your Network Operator. I suppose its not bad for a month - heavy user would be roughtly a couple of GBP. I take it the maps get stored on the SD card. I also think I would want a full car kit for this (or its goodbye battery)
Guest mcwarre Posted June 8, 2003 Report Posted June 8, 2003 I also think I would want a full car kit for this (or its goodbye battery) Just buy a car charger... It costs £39.99 a year on the P800. Not bad. I think that the SPV screen will be a tad small and thus very distracting when driving. It's bad enough when looking at who is calling never mind trying to read a map. Any others interested in this :?:
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted June 8, 2003 Report Posted June 8, 2003 I'm evaluating the P800 version for another site... It'd be great, if it used CellIDs to know your position, but manually setting position (altho the UI is great) is a bit of a pain... P
Guest xanadu Posted June 26, 2003 Report Posted June 26, 2003 I find the Orange RAC Traffic WAP pages very good for traffic news. I use to use Trafficmaster on Orange for free before they discontinued the service about a month ago. It used to show arrows on a map showing where the holdups were and the direction, with delay times. I guess they discontinued it because Trafficmaster want people to pay £40 a year plus call charges now.
Guest Nigma Posted July 2, 2003 Report Posted July 2, 2003 I find 99% of traffic serivces useless anyway. You are only told that there is "a delay" when you are sitting in the middle of it, which you proberbly worked out by the fact your car was not moving. Anand

Anand Gosh, you've tried em all and only 1% are any good, that must include the Trafficmaster gizmo I use cos it tells me about loads of delays before I get to them. Unfortunately for me I was delayed 45 minutes this morning, I had warnings 2 motorway junctions before delay began, but the alternative routes would not have save me time - I know cos I've already tried them. They probably work out there are delays because some pepole are stood in a traffic jam - otherwise there wouldn't be a delay - its not brain surgery. Vince
Guest jeremyp Posted July 3, 2003 Report Posted July 3, 2003 I have a Traffic Master Monitor in my car and although it costs £20 a month it is great, it shows where all the delays are with speed arrows just like their website. If the SW for the Smartphone is along similar lines it will be great. I have to say though, the most useful bits of it are the auto locate (based on determining the nearest roadside sensor) and the touchscreen. The latter will be not an issue with the joystick on the SPV. Jeremy
Guest Fullfast Posted July 9, 2003 Report Posted July 9, 2003 I am currently subscribed to the i Traffic service for the P800, it saved me being stuck on the M25 numerous times, it has preferences with the default being show delay times.......it is amazingly accurate as I tested it one day as I was bored and it was about 5 minutes out on waiting. I have been reliably informed that the next release of the software is going to include location based positioning so it will follow you on the map as you change cell id's.......this apparently is going to be free to current subscribers.......
Guest Gorskar Posted July 9, 2003 Report Posted July 9, 2003 Wow - if that makes it into the smartphone release I think they will see a lot of customers!
Guest Brody Posted August 27, 2003 Report Posted August 27, 2003 Well its Quarter 3, any news or am i being too optimistic?!
Guest nickcornaglia Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 "]I'm evaluating the P800 version for another site... Paul! Are you burning the candle at both ends? What's this P800 stuff?
