Guest JoelRae Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 Hi y'all, I've had my SPV for a few weeks now and am well pleased with it ... it's not even crashed once!! I figured I ought to be making the most out of it though, and everyone suggests this as the best forum for advice n stuff 8) Okay, firstly a rather strange request ... does anyone know of an adapter that will take the rs-232 hole on the bottom of my SPV and turn it into a female USB port, into which I can plug my 128mb USB keydrive? That'd save me having to buy a bigger storage card, although to be honest I'm not sure the adapter exists and even if I did I'm not certain anything would happen when I plugged everything in ... oh well, it's possible I guess  Secondly, is there any way to get a character count when sending sms messages? It's quite a hefty pain in the ass having to count the characters in each message that look's like its 160 chars long :? I think I'll leave it there, sorry if this is in the wrong category or anything! Thanks for any advice, and for the things I've already picked up by reading previous posts!! Take it easy, Joel :D

It's quite a hefty pain in the ass having to count the characters in each message that look's like its 160 chars long Hopefully the next update released (don't know when) will address this, as the danish update had a buggy version, and i think the same version is on some Tanager/spvx/qtec7070's . Some notepad applications have a character count facility, you could use them. Hopefully they will make it work properly soon Sorry for the negativeness - and you did post in the correct place  Will
Guest Brody Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 Firstly welcome to MoDaCo!!! It is the best place to be for answers!! Q1. I don't think that the USB convertor exists i'm afraid  Q2. A character counter is present in the Danish update although its still not perfect apparently, it is advised not to install updates meant for different regions. Programs like Orneta Notepad will count your characters and enable you to send the text that you have written in the form of a text message  Planus SMS also counts the characters and offers cheaper text messages :D  Other than that we are all waiting for the next update which will hopefully have a character counter  Ps. Do a search for any of the software that i have mentioned and you'll find it no problems :D EDIT: Damn you're quick today Will!!
Guest JoelRae Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 Cheers for the help guys, I'm definately feelin' the MoDaCo love  Here's a couple more for you ... I've installed Orneta Notepad (haven't app-unlocked my phone so glad it was certified) and it does the job perfectly ... how would I go about moving the shortcut from the "accessories" folder in the programs menu to somewhere more promenant? Also, is there a way to change which number is automatically dialed for a contact ... if I look someone up in the phonebook and just press the green button when their name is highlighted instead of opening the contact and selecting the right number, I usually end up calling their house instead of their mobile as intended  Thanks again everyone, Joel
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 Moving shortcuts: In ActiveSync click "Explore", and go to IPSMWindowsStart Menu You can then move the Orneta shortcut from the accessories folder to any other location in the Start Menu directory. Auto number: Click the contact you want to change, then select the number you want to dial with a green keypress. Click "Menu" and "set as default".
Guest vijay555 Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 JoelRae, i hate to be the one to say it, but a lot of this stuff is covered elsewhere. First, you really should unlock your phone. costs nothing, is quick, safe and painless; no drawbacks at all, and will open your phone up to a whole new world. To move shortcuts, either use ActiveSync, or a fileexplorer for the SPV: Once you've unlocked, you're going to need a file explorer, SmartExplorer being pretty much the best in my opinion, especially since it's free for now (shareware). Hunt out Monolithix's webpage (see his signature or google), he has most of the software you'll ever need. once you've got an explorer (or clicked Explore on activesync), navigate to IPSM, Windows, Start menu. Then you can move shortcuts around/delete/create new folders to your heart's content. You might also want to assign your favorite apps to Speeddials. I've written a post elsewhere with my suggestions on best software to get hold of once unlocked. Re the phone number: Go into contacts, highlight the phone number you want as default, and press menu Softkey, and choose "set as default"! Alternatively, when you're typing in a phone number to dial, once you can see the contact you want, (Eg "Vijay"), scroll down to the name and press left and right on dpad. this will allow you to choose which number to use (or if you choose SMS it will start writing an SMS) Hope it helps! V
Guest JoelRae Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 cheers guys ... and yep, point noted about stuff being elsewhere V
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 point noted about stuff being elsewhere V  This is the Help and Advice section so repeated questions are expected here so don't worry about it  we all had to start somewhere and until you get used to the search feature just ask away.
Guest vijay555 Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 Great point awarner, i didn't think. Although, JoelRae, i would recommend you read a couple of the great Articles in the Articles section of the forum! Great for tweaking to the max! Likewise, if not already seen, Coolsmartphone! i've only had my phone for a few weeks, but perhaps the main reason for getting it (over P800) was that i could tweak and program it! Love getting hands dirty... Good luck mate, and keep asking the Qs. V
Guest JoelRae Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 Hi, hopin someone's still around ... am currently mid-orange official de-cert, seems to have worked so far with my screen saying "your SPV has been unlocked (then in french)" ... the orange instructions say I'm gonna be asked to download a small registration application, but there's no sign of it!! I've been GPRS connected on and off, anyone know how long I should wait? Cheers, Joel
Guest Brody Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 Did Orange actually say that you'd need to download the registration app or is that in the decert guide?? Cos i don't think u need it if you've received that message, u should be done and ready for the world of un-certified software!!
Guest JoelRae Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 I'm just following the points on the orange instructions page ... bout stage 17!! I guess I'll just try an uncert app and see
Guest Brody Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 You only need to go that far if you cannot receive the message by gprs and u have so ur all done:) Enjoy!!!
Guest martin Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 Thats it completed. Dont worry about the developer stuff.
Guest Brody Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 And to make something an url either dont use anything like brackets or quotation marks before and after the url without spaces or use the "url" button in the "Post a reply" function, its pretty self explanatory:)
Guest JoelRae Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 cheers everyone ... made a link, installed a de-cert app ... now that's cookin with gas
