Guest HelloDave Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 OK, pointless topic this one, but several Nokia owners I know are blatantly jealous of my SPV, and some of the reasons they have come out with as to why Nokias are better made me laugh. For example- My phone's better because it has polyphonic ringtones (After reading through my entire inbox) Your phone's too hard to use Why do I need the internet on my phone - I've got WAP (7650 owner) What do I want a "homescreen" for? I can have any picture I want as wallpaper. I'd rather have a Nokia, they're easier to use and you know what you're getting! Why do I want that - it's like a little computer! Anyone else got any amusing comments?
Guest fozzie Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 hehe, with comments like that, the SPV would be wasted on them  I had someone say, "But I don't use my phone much". Even the concept of calling cards was wasted. I just give up with those sort of people and go off and play another level of XRick or or another hole of Links :D
Guest ajb3000 Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 "it's bad enough having to use microsoft products on my computer, why on earth would i want their software on my phone!"
Guest Vector Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 "The new Nokia 7250 is better than your phone" quote by a big headed friend
Guest siu99spj Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 I really want to know what quantifies this business of 'better'. Personally I like the SPV much more than any Nokia I've used (3210 and 3310), but that doesn't mean much. I like me SPV. My brother, biggest Nokia lover on the planet :?, also likes his SPV so far. Give him a couple of weeks to get his bigger SD card (Currently, he's borrowed my 8MB card AND my 4MB card from DAT) and we'll see if he wants to get rid of his SPV! Can't wait until Xmas when I can upgrade to the latest. Anyone else noticed that we do effectively have the smallest PC available. There are all these fools fitting PC's into humidors and such (Here) and we have one that fits our hand. And it plays Rick Dangerous, Doom and, if we're lucky, Quake. [Anyone know what happened to that?]
Guest mattbrown Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 i have encountered some of those quotes - ignorance is bliss!!!!!!
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 My flatmate's currently building one of there: http://www.mini-itx.com/projects/ammobox/ But in a smaller ammo box  Those mini itx boards rock.
Guest spacemonkey Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 Quote from friends: "I have been totally immasculated by my Nokia 3650 and fear the sheer heterosexuality of the SPV" "I can't beleive there is no way to attach the stylus to the SPV when not in use, I'd just keep losing it" But seriously, to people who say they don't really use their phone... I never really used mine, I still don't use it to make calls much, but since I got SPV I use the phone for non phone activities many times a day. And I used to have a PDA which I never used because I couldn't remember to carry it round.
Guest siu99spj Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 I think Spacemonkey has just explained a good half of us (Or at least me). Having come off a pay as you go contract (Which I barely used) I can honestly say having having free minutes is great, unless you're a week in and realise you have 30 minutes left! Anyhow, it used for calls, but I do find I'm spending more time playing XRick or Boxy Pocket!
Guest vijay555 Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 on a related/unrelated topic: anyone read the press release about how they're trying to increase our data usage by offering more services. The phone industry is going to go into plateau/recession until next-gen establishes comfortably, so the way to get more cash is to increase value services. [a la AOL] GPRS prices are going the wrong way, bring em down! Then we'll all be MSNing and whatever. I was surprised at the Meet (MoDaCoM!!!) about the number of people using the SPV for browsing MoDaCo and MSNing. Carriers will only encourage us to use the phone more when they lower the price. SPV/SPV2 could be killer mobile apps (especially with .net), but i notice that most of us will spend our time tied to offline functions, ie xRick  Orange, wake up! We WANT to use the phone, so let us.. I love that argument "How many polyphonic notes can it do?" Umm: all of em? Mr Nokia, please let me have your bleepy bop Eminem ringtone...Midnight will show you what to do with it! Smartphone 2002 is not particularly user friendly, but when tweaked and tidied up, it's a powerful and useable tool. It does have a learning curve. Most nokia users don't want that. But as Magneto might say to SPV, "You're a God amongst Insects" :D Lv, as ever, Uncle Travelling Matt
Guest Big Ron - No Longer a Mem Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 I, my wife and my son encapsulate the three groups of "typical users". We each own a phone appropriate to our needs. My wife is a busy career girl. She owns a Handspring Treo. I've mentioned it before - and was met by ill-informed comments (like "it won't do GPRS! " "you can't send emails!") from SPV owners. It not only CAN use GPRS, but sends Emails too - and has a bigger screen and QWERTY keyboard. In terms of the handbag space it takes up, it has the SPV beaten hands-down. My son's 11, and wanted something with "street cred". His NEED is for something that he can call home on to say "I missed the train" or whatever. MMS is handy but not essential. He's got an Ericsson T300 with clip-on camera, clip on MP3 player, clip-on FM radio, clip-on torch and clip-on laser pointer. (That's three features not found on an SPV) I've got a small Alcatel phone. It sends SMS messages, has a built-in alarm clock and calculator, and that's ALL I need. I own it outright (I bought it "SIM free") having paid the immense sum of £25 for it. And my monthly contract (with o2) costs me a massive £3.54 for 60 (genuinely!) free "anytime" minutes. (The £3.54 is the monthly "itemised billing" charge) I don't NEED something compilcated. If I want to play games, I'll borrow my son's (considerably superior) GBA. The "best" phone is the one that fits your needs best. The urge to own the flashiest piece of kit simply because it IS the flashiest - regardless of whether you need even half of the features - is really kind of sad. Sad, anyway in someone older than my 11 year old son.
Guest madu Posted June 6, 2003 Report Posted June 6, 2003 So who owns SPV in your trio then?> PS: I agree on the final point about needs. The only thing is you might want/need one feature sooo much (ie MP3 player, _real_ color screen, MS Windows [total customisability] that it will make all the features you do not need not a waste of technology or 'having flashest kit', but just extras that you have by getting what you want... Also, some people just love technology - and that is their 'need' - to have the latest mobile device they can play with! This can also just be a toy you know. BUT: If you get this phone coz your buddy showed you Doom on it (purely a novelty factor, innit?), you wonder what a cradle is and don't know what 'Microsoft Windows Powered Smartphone' really is about (silly example i know, but there's a point) then it is in fact a waste of technology in a way for the sakke of having latest flashest kit just coz it is and you wanna be cool. Or if you bought it coz a sales rap told you it can record telephone convos etc  Personally I dont really show off the phone (if ppl ask, I tell em) - I have it and I love it. It is a long-awaited solution. I manage my data/contacts/calendar there and it is an entertainment tool that I do not have to carry separately. I do not need to carry that MD and copy MDs for it/ that takes an hour or so. Also, it has some games and many features I do not use - games i get bored off too quickly and the purpose is to replace that fag I would have in a 5min boredom and GPRS I only use for same purpose (wap did fine for traintimes) and even though having real i-net on phone is cool, I have no _real_ need for that (having bband @ work and home, but appreciate it's usefulness under circumstances). MMS - I don't use, but I can see that come handy/or just a good laugh on occasions. Anyway - even though I do not use/need/want many features at all, I still love fiddling with it. I like techy stuff and the 'freedom factor' of doing whatever you want to your phone (apart from silly ringtones/background) does it for me. Still, I would not accept anything else for now. Only a better SmartPhone. Now all this typing made me hungry.. Or in fact my hunger made me type all the above crap. Thanks for reading. Not addressed to anyone BTW. I'm off to lunch (mmmmm foood).
Guest pyke Posted June 8, 2003 Report Posted June 8, 2003 "....GO AHEAD!BUY THE SPV AND LET BILL GATES RULE YOUR LIFE!!!"......this is what my "nokia7650-loving" friends told me when they found out that i'm giving up my 7650 for the tanager...hehe!some sour graping, huh.
