Maybe it's just me, but over the last say ... 2 months there was a bit of a feverish rush of new apps & customisations - which now seems to have slowed down a bit.

Seems to me like I was downloading something new & exciting nearly every night for a while! You know, pocketMVP  , pocket TV, skins & tweaks, screensavers :D , new apps etc etc.

Now maybe it's just impatient old me - if so I'll be delighted to hear it! - or does this mean that the SPV as we know it is beginning to reach the peak of it's development, which I suppose is inevitable (is it??)? Or are we likely to see anything else remarkable in the near future?

Don't get me wrong here - I'm not trying to say "hurry up with our new stuff" to developers or anything!! Just want to get some opinions!

xRick and the Spectrum emulator have come out just recently?

And there are lots more SmartPhone apps in the pipeline that I am aware of, but can't talk about yet.

I think that releases will continue growing...

and what about my homescreens????? smartanoid is due pretty much any day (and that was a lot of work), i'm also working 4 (count em, 4) new games, a new homescreen (modaco), other modaco gfx and loads of other stuff, it most definitely hasnt slowed down for me :D

actually, i thought that app development was speeding up, and hitting its peak? not a chance, as more and more people buy smartphones, more and more developers will emerge. Maybe you just underestimate the time taken to develop apps and games

Roll on smartanoid, the anticipation is killing me, i love that game!! And the four games you're working on sound cool if they're anything to do with our chats on irc?? How did your "meeting" go??

er yep, have to agree with Midnight.

AFAIK there has never been so much in development for the Smartphone as there is now, i think it seemed more so before because they were smaller developments than they are now as people are realising the full potentional of the phone  and therefore doing bigger and better developments :D

i agree nothing pushing the boundaries. all these crappy games that are basic or rehased. ok we have emulators which r fun but due to the restriction placed by the spv's processor we are limited when things like the mitac with its 200mhz processor come out then we can push stuff.

looking forward to

linux on spv

amstrad emulator

neo geo emul

a quality racing game

flash

snes updated emulator

tornament play via gprs (gaming)

and some graphically special games like metalstrike now thats incredible graphics!!!wow

i think too much reliance is being put on the emulators, a game coded specifically for the smatrphone will always be better than an emulated game, simple as that. Through our testing, many types of game are possible, and the quality of gfx is only limited by the artists imagination (for 2d games). The main problem seems to be to me that people want to try and make money out of the smartphone playtform (obviously) and arent really concerned about the quality, which is sad, but happens on every platform such as ps2, xbox, pc, etc. but out of the cr*p shines a few gems

agreed! You will notice a fair bit of rubbish in the software catalogue, with poor graphics and quality control, and only sells cause there is nothing better around. A quick look at the screenshot should give you a good idea of whether you want to read further. Of course there are a number of titles which are extremely good, but sometimes it is hard to tell just from the description.

If people could post their opinions on titles they own in the modaco software catalogue, that might be helpful to people wondering what to purchase.

Excellent! (in a Mr. Burns voice)

This is just the kind of response I was looking for!

I wasn't trying to say that I think developers are being slow or anything  (as per my first post) - just wanting to find out the general feeling amongst those in the know!

The recent frenzy I was talking about was meant to include all the stuff you guys mentioned (mdinight's homescreens, xrick etc).

Am now still full of hope & joy for the future of smartphone! & Paul - why do you insist on always teasing us by telling us about stuff you can't tell us about!?!

coz we tell him not to tell anybody what we're working on hehehe

The reason it seems like Smartphone development has slowed is because Microsoft was paying for certification up until June 1st...~600 bucks a shot so everyone was pushing hard to release their programs in time.

Now that the certification is no longer paid for you'll see less new programs however I expect them to be higher quality (they have to be to sell enough to cover costs)

Another reason for slower development may be that it is spring and soon summer, and lots of people in Europe take vacations at this time of the year.

Also, doing software for this platform is still not viable yet from a business stand. With only 70,000 units or so sold, how can you expect to make any sizable revenues ?

From my point of view the Smartphone OS has followed this pattern: there was an initial rush of programers doing realatively 'simple' programs (progmaticaly speaking; either simple aps or ports from Pocket PC) to learn the platform.

Then once skills have been sufficently honed they then set thier sights on bigger projects, which obviously take more time.

I think that at the moment we are in a slight lull, we have passed the initial flurry but we have yet to hit the really good stuff. I think that software development for the Smartphone platform can only grow.

Here's to more cool stuff! 8)

oh, come on, seriously, give us time, its all very well craeting crappy games (it happens on every platform) but some of us are out there creating quality games, it takes time, and you'll see that good games can be created from very limited resources. theres a lot of talented people out there, just give them time.

Of course, the summer holidays mean the lil-coders (uni nerds ) can spend more time coding - ahh 4 months off in 2 weeks time..

Well generally speaking the SPV isn't the fastest phone in the world, there are a few things you can do to speed it up.

- add the speedtweaks from midnight (search the customization forum for these while his site is down

- turn off the sounds when you press keys: (Programs/Settings/Sounds/think it's the last option - set it to off)

- set down the multisomething timeout time (Programs/Settings/6/Multisomething timeout - set it to 1/2 second)

There's probably a bunch of other things that will speed up the performance of your phone, but turning it on and off will always take its time. Although there is a QuickClose program, that shuts down the phone faster than normally! I only used it once, and it messed up my phone. And while it might have been a coincedence, I'm not brave enough to try it again =).

and also...i wanna know which tones drains batter fast....is it the wav tone or the polytones and midi tones??? thanks

Hmmm the SPV doesn't support polytones (TMBK) - and I would think, that if there is any difference in battery use, midi tones would save the battery, but I'm not sure if there is any difference at all!!

Best way to save your battery, is to set the time it turns off the backlight down to a minimum. (Programs/Settings/9/2)

Good luck...

Edited: Oh yeah and this is probably not the right place to post, you might wanna try out Help and Advice next time. (Any super mod wanna split/move it?)

Ok guys, read this thread with interest.

But as a point of comparison, how is Symbian software development fairing at present?

This isn't a rhetorical question by the way - given that Symbian had maybe a 6 month head start on Smartphone, it would be interesting to see if any parallels could be drawn.

Guest awarner [MVP]

Symbian has had more than six months headstart, it's been around for a while now.

Unless you are talking about Symbian being more mainstream?

Guest morpheus2702

Sure, if you take the 9210 as the starting block then granted, been around for yonks. But I think it is better to consider the 7650 as the watershed for serious prosumer/consumer use.

Guest awarner [MVP]

Ok  thought that was what you ment, always best to check.

Heheheh, too true! Like all things SPV/Smartphone, best to cross-check, categorise and reference...
