after following some very good advice posted here i now have my spv working as a usb modem... (thx jtsaint)

however i have a few questions about using my spv like this:

when i connect using my latop, it seems to think my spv is using a 230kbps connection speed. Now whilst i'd be very pleased to hear that this is true, i doubt this is right... ..my home bb connection runs at 570... does anyone know what the actual connection speed is? (assuming i have full gprs signal)

also, as i am connected using (i assume) gprs, does my regular tarif apply - ie. if im using Orange Contract and have signed up for the 1mb per month package, will i be charged extra for using my phone with my laptop in this way? or is it done per minute instead?

The connection between the SPV and the modem is actualy a serial connection the phone end (even though it's connected via USB) so speed will be limited I'm afraid

..so what is the theroetical maximum speed the gprs network can handle?

if the limiting factor is the way the phone connects to the laptop (or it's own modem as i understand it), what data rate could the phone potentially get if this was improved?

Max theoretical GPRS speed before overheads is ~51k down/14k up or there abouts.

It says 230kbps merely because thats the max connection speed you told windows to accept

ahha - i c

ok - just one more question then...

ive heard about this 3g thing - in fact i almost bought one of those phones instead (in the end i made the right choice methinks)...

...i presume that this is not the same as gprs because it is fast enough to allow live video calls (or so ive been told) - so what kind of transfer rate does that have?

I think current 3G handsets are capped at 128kbps.

Theoretical max is 2mbit though, assuming you're in the same cell.
