Guest muff Posted June 9, 2003 Report Posted June 9, 2003 just a quick poll classic remakes or complete new games???
Guest NederSoren Posted June 9, 2003 Report Posted June 9, 2003 I think i get tired of the clasics pretty fast... But i like 'em though.. Clasics with a litlle modification is good to.. but i think i prefer new games..
Guest Vector Posted June 9, 2003 Report Posted June 9, 2003 A bit of both really, i'd like to see some cool new ones tho
Guest XGEOX Posted June 9, 2003 Report Posted June 9, 2003 nah - either they're classics or they arent - i hate seeing classic games like space invaders or breakout being 'modified' with cheesy 'improved' graphics or backgrounds with naked women on... ...either have exact replicas of the old titles, or make completely new games.
Guest Deno123 Posted June 9, 2003 Report Posted June 9, 2003 Would rather play new games instead of classics...
Guest James Posted June 9, 2003 Report Posted June 9, 2003 new ones! although... anyone remember cannon fodder? i had it on the amiga.
Guest Deno123 Posted June 9, 2003 Report Posted June 9, 2003 hmmm... didn't play Amiga so often.. Can only remember sensible soccer and superfrog...
Guest muff Posted June 9, 2003 Report Posted June 9, 2003 so far it looks like new over classic (we'll see how it develops though) does that include new games over emus? I'm trying to gauge what you guys actually want to see in terms of gaming one thing about classics is that they rely on simple games mechanics and controls, and addictive gameplay - but it might be that they are only addictive to those that experienced them first time around OR that the addictiveness is down to their simplicity either way, the reason for the poll is to decide what sort of game the marketplace (i.e. you guys) actually want to play - there is no point in us programmers cranking out clones of classics and emus if you guys don't actually want them  muff
Guest Martin@Home Posted June 9, 2003 Report Posted June 9, 2003 I vote classics ! SP Invaders is very cool and the simple gameplay but "one more go" appeal has stood the test of time very well. Why change a winning formula !
Guest davy Posted June 9, 2003 Report Posted June 9, 2003 I prefer the classics so far of the games developed for the spv. I will however gratefully try any of the games that you guys take the time and effort to produce. davy.
Guest XGEOX Posted June 9, 2003 Report Posted June 9, 2003 hmm - after voting for new games, i'd have to say that i would like to see a verison of asteroids - but i think thats been covered somewhere else on the forums... - one thing i think you should stay away from is 3d - i recently bought interstellar flames, which whilst being a good game, just goes to prove how poor 3d looks on small screens like the spv's - i mean the phone is capable of running 3d, but it just isnt worth it on such a small screen - stick to simple 2d graphics  ps: pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls pls do a version of asteroid :D
Guest mavisdavis Posted June 9, 2003 Report Posted June 9, 2003  ummmm Cannon Fodder (GET ORRRF MIIY LAND) WOW Now that would be a truley amazing game if it could be ported  It`d be worth getting the sack for like I nealry did today when my boss caught me playing Space Invaders for 20 mins at my bench  but when he saw it he went all wobbly legged and said it pissed on his *SPIT* Nokia 8)
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted June 9, 2003 Report Posted June 9, 2003 Plenty of classics about, especially with the Emu's. New for me
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted June 9, 2003 Report Posted June 9, 2003 the thing is muff, is that you do such a good job I have to vote classic
Guest Gorskar Posted June 10, 2003 Report Posted June 10, 2003 The thing with classics is that they are pretty much guarenteed to be fun if the coversion is good (and your conversions ARE good!!) A new game is a bit more uncertain.
Guest JoelRae Posted June 10, 2003 Report Posted June 10, 2003 I went for new as well ... although I would love to see an spv version of Tony Hawks Skate Boarder 8) I guess the problem is "new" game ideas are hard to come by!!
Guest midnight Posted June 10, 2003 Report Posted June 10, 2003 NEW NEW NEW!!!!! hehe classics are all well and good for that nostalgia feel, but as i've found from many of the classic games that have been remade, i got bored of them pretty quick, there was nothing new to see, no new surprises. surely the idea of some games is to see what the game can throw at you next, without that feel, some of the game is lost. For me the really old games aint all that good anymore, i wanna see more from our little spv, not emulate something thats 20 yrs old, i wanna see 16bit colour, i wanna listen to stereo sound and music, i wanna see sprite rotation, scaling, alpha effects etc. (oh and speaking personally, making the original games is boring, i cant use my graphic talents ) But, i do believe enhancing old games is a good option (i disagree with what was mentioned before), really, there are no new games to be made (kind of), almost every game is either a direct remake with new ideas (g-pod and rocket elite gold = thrust, both great remakes) and graphics or inspired by other games in some way. Dont forget, Arkanoid is a remake of breakout, and in my eyes arkanoid is easily the better of the two games.
Guest Croccy22 Posted June 10, 2003 Report Posted June 10, 2003 I agree with midnight. I think spv enhanced versions of the classic games are ther best way to go. Bring the classic gaming into the 21st century. Games have not changed since they were first inented. Pong for example, two paddles and a ball. May seem like a simple concept for a game, but now look at something like love smash tennis for the ps2, exactly the same game idea but just enhanced game enigne and much better graphics. Now if someone tried to sell you pong for £50 or Love smash Tennis for £50, which one would you prefer?? All game ideas have already been done, It is now up to the programmer to try and add new ideas and enhanced graphics to the orignal designs. Matt
Guest XGEOX Posted June 10, 2003 Report Posted June 10, 2003 Now if someone tried to sell you pong for £50 or Love smash Tennis for £50, which one would you prefer??pong definately - especially if it was one of the original systems... ..it'd be worth loads more. ...there are no new games to be made.... hmm, not sure if i agree with that - just look at ''monkey ball'' on the GC.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted June 10, 2003 Report Posted June 10, 2003 hmm, not sure if i agree with that - just look at ''monkey ball'' on the GC. Sorry mate you're too young to remember Marble madness? Same type of game.
Guest midnight Posted June 10, 2003 Report Posted June 10, 2003 hehe, you beat me to it, yup, monkey ball is a 3d version of marble madness (or my personal favourite of all the different versions.... gyroscope)
Guest fde Posted June 10, 2003 Report Posted June 10, 2003 For me it's hard to tell. Playability is key for me. The SPV doesn't realy feature controls well suited for action games, which need a stick and two buttons. The "volume button approach" seems to be by far the best for now (however it still sucks somehow). This makes the SPV not realy suited for ports of classics (in my opinion). For Retro-Adventures the screen is too small and the lack of a mouse makes it tough to keep up just a moderate pace in the game. Being 35 I've started with Pong and seen most of classics. I love Moon Patrol and all the rest. If playability on the SPV were good, I definitely would go for classics. Unfortunately this is not the case. The new games on the other side arent really new. Already Tetris - when it came out - was somehow based on an old Apple II game. Just have a closer look at Toki Tori. Games such as for example Dino Eggs had all elements in them that now went into Toki Tori. Just that Toki features better graphics, more variety and above all good playability. 1942, Aerofighters and all the rest are good games. But lousy controls turn the best game into cr**. -Frank
Guest midnight Posted June 10, 2003 Report Posted June 10, 2003 hmmm, dont forget, the spv is the spv, many of the newer phones feature better control methods (tanager and compals have joysticks), anyways, whatever, thats just a side point. This is why i was arguing new games, because we are effectively remaking from scratch any games (even if they are variations on arcade classics), this allows us to change control methods and make them as playable as possible on the spv, something that cannot be done as effectively with emulators. I kind of dont agree with your final comment tho, i'd say 1942 would make an excellent game, as would any vertically scrolling shooter, just as long as you are carefull with the controls (i already have an idea for a 1942 style game), autofire is almost a must, and that then makes the control rather easy actually, and i think Odyssey got it just about right. I think a majority of games can be made/remade so long as you just take care over the control method (and never use the action button for anything if the dpad/joystick is for movement hehehe ) but my main argument for new is simply to get really nice looking games out of the thing, show those n*kia owners a thing or two :D
