Guest akarno Posted June 10, 2003 Report Posted June 10, 2003 I just want to put down a few thoughts on the software that has been release for the SPV (and other stuff). There are a few good commercial releases, but mainly a load of junk. The shareware that people have written or ported from CE is generally better than the commercial releases. I am thinking of things like Pocket MPV, Task Manager, Gnuboy, Invaders and Doom. Then I saw this. http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/68/30956.html It shows some of the software that will be available for the Nokia N-Gage. I find it hard to believe that it is technically that far ahead of the SPV yet there will be titles like Tomb Raider, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon, Rayman 3, Tony Hawks Pro Skater, Pathway to Glory, and Mercel Desailly Pro Soccer. Why is there nothing of that quality available for the SPV. I know Orange aimed it mainly for the business market, but the phone is second to none as an entertainment phone. Look at what the phone can do already. It is miles ahead of anything else currently on the market. I have a theory. Could it be that they are not selling enough of them to make it worth the major players developing good entertainment software for the phone. Why aren't they selling like "hot cakes" when there are so many feature for very little money. I thought it might be because you need to be a little technical and dig around a bit to get the best out of the phone. Then I saw this month's Carphone Warehouse buyers guide, pick one up next time you pass. If you want to know why loads of people aren't queuing up to buy the phone then have a look at how it is being marketed by the UK's (or is that Europe's I can't remember) biggest phone retailer. I challenge anyone to get enthusiastic about the SPV based on how they market it. It the main section listed features are; colour screen, tri-band, polyphonic ring tones (strictly speaking not true), and camera. Nothing about being able to listen to dozens of albums or view a whole feature film, nothing about a full web browser. The comparison chart isn't any better. Did you know you are limited to 30 SMS messages on the phone. Orange don't seem much better at pushing the phone. When I tell friends I have a phone that you can watch films on and play great computer games on and can browse the internet they look at me in astonishment. In this age of mass marketing, why don't most people, even those for whom their mobile phone is their best friend, know about the SPV. Maybe if more people knew about it, they would buy it and we would get better software. End of long rant
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted June 10, 2003 Report Posted June 10, 2003 Hopefully some bright spark will allow N-Gage games to run on SP2k2... That would be hilarious  P
Guest morpheus2702 Posted June 10, 2003 Report Posted June 10, 2003 Akarno has a point - you can have the best product in the world, but if (next to) no-one knows about it then you ain't going to shift boxes. Orange HAVE done a lousy job of marketing the SPV - I mean, compare to the campaign that Vodafone ran for Live! How many sales do you think that the GD87 and GX10 picked up on the back of that? Sure it doesn't help that the SPV is a bit brickish and doesn't appeal to the Starbuck set, but a phone that you can have real music as your ringtone, play video on? Christ, what 15 year old wouldn't want that? And where is MS in all of this? Surely it is in their own interest to see that the SPV sells through, and therefore put up some advertising cash? More convinced than ever that there is so much politicing involved with Smartphone, the Canary and the carriers that prevent the SPV ever achieving greatness.
Guest urdone311 Posted June 11, 2003 Report Posted June 11, 2003 I completely agree... I live in Los Angeles, California, USA and i feel like i'm the only guy in the WORLD with this phone. All my friends drool over it and ask "where can i get one of those?!" There are so many times we are all just sitting around "under the effects of a strong weed" and just enjoy a portable loudspeaker full of punk-rock. Everyone loves it, (not to mention the girls!) This phone is so sophisticated i wouldn't be surprised to find out someone could manufacture an actual portable gaming controller that plugs in to the bottom of the phone. It SEEMS as if the Orange SPV was just a test release so we could work out all the bugs for them so when they start releasing the new ones they will be able to blow everyone away. (even though it already does). Once there are more phones in production with big names like Samsung or something like that, it will be a world of sweetness.
Guest amo Posted June 11, 2003 Report Posted June 11, 2003 Ngage is ridiculous too, made to rival the likes of gameboy advance but you need to remortgage to buy one, and im sure all the kids nowadays have hundreds to spend on a handheld console

Guest kingdom master Posted June 11, 2003 Report Posted June 11, 2003 then out of all the games in that list what is possible to port, we have many developers on here that are very talented so why cant we get somthing going to provide development support. cause if people are up for it ill fund a project through my company and we'll get somthing going. kingdom.
Guest Gorskar Posted June 11, 2003 Report Posted June 11, 2003 There are a few high quality titles in development (Speedway Jam, Worms, etc) which are the games that should really drive the platform. We already have some very nice games released, (RocketElite, Links etc) which show off the platform very well. Interstellar flames is also a great showoff graphically at least. Im sure the SPV is capable of some very nice games (maybe not quite up to the N-Gage though, with its dedicated 3D hardware) Once we see faster SP2002/3 phones emerging this barrier will also go upwards. The problem I think (as a couple of people have already pointed out) is that the SP2002 crop of phones is still a fairly small market, so has difficuly attracting the big name developers. Orange/Microsoft really need to be doing more to push this phone - perhaps spend a few pounds on a tele advert? Other Manufacturers seem to think this is a worthwhile expenditure. Once the phones start selling the software will ramp up also I expect!
Guest nobznss Posted June 11, 2003 Report Posted June 11, 2003 Well, I can tell you this much, had I known about the SPV say 6 months ago, I wouldn't have gone through as many cell phones as I have. From SonyEricsson t68i to Motorola v70 to Nokia 3650, to SPV. I would've skipped all of that and gone straight to the SPV. It's such a pimp phone, I don't know who wouldn't want one that is an avid gadget freak. There's SO much potential for this phone, it just pains me to see none of it realized.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted June 11, 2003 Report Posted June 11, 2003 i wouldn't be surprised to find out someone could manufacture an actual portable gaming controller that plugs in to the bottom of the phone. There is a joystick in development, some of us here have been luck enough to see it. Back to the Business link above, "only Orange has a Microsoft-enabled handset, the SPV, on the market." what do they mean Microsoft-enabled :?
Guest madu Posted June 11, 2003 Report Posted June 11, 2003 Maybe considering this is in fact a test-release and we are guinnea pigs (some of us are super-guinnea / or even super-pigs hehe) anyway, to the point: They might not want to mass market this phone because it is in fact not ready for it. They can advertise that it can do so and so, but there is no real support for these features. If someone pays money for all the advertised features, they want it to work. Simple as that. And telling a customer to go spend a day on modaco just to setup the phone and learn how thing work (plus explain the joys of regedit) :D - is just not right. Many people will want the phone if they know what it does, but not being able to work it due to not being gadget freaks and the phone not being the most user-friendly gadget i have seen :>> >> They are afraid to spoil the first impression of the platform before it is ready for mass market! When it is, I'm sure the amount of cash that will go into marketing the platform will be [big] For now, mostly the techy people know about this, but personally I have found out about this phone from one of my 40yr old friends... hehe sheer coincidence. (and i saw it still in box, so no clue what it could do..) off to lunch
