Guest Mort Posted June 11, 2003 Report Posted June 11, 2003 I've been looking around for a decent Palm-looking homescreen, but i've not come up with much. I would like to tackle it myself, but I can see a few problems before I begin, and I hope you guys can help me... The home screen "menu" will consist of 9 icons in a square... and the user pushes left, down, up, right to get to these icons... action button will then select the program etc. The problem is, the home screen will only support pushing up or down... which limits the menu system somewhat... I havent yet seen a home screen that supports this side scrolling (except the recent programs plugin)... Any ideas? Mort P.S My ideas are coming from the Palm OS Oldschool skin found on Smartphony... that should give you some indication as to what im trying to achieve. Here's a link to an old post Post
Guest drblow Posted June 12, 2003 Report Posted June 12, 2003 havent yet seen a home screen that supports this side scrolling (except the recent programs plug-in)... Er... what programs plugin was that m8?? As far as I knew, there was only the mru plugin which accessed programs. It is possible to set a shortcut from the homescreen to a program, but only for a single program per vertical plugin space - if you follow me!! Plugins can only be arranged vertically (as you say, there is no side scrolling) & therefore I can't see sny way you could get 9 shortcut plugins arranged like you want. I think it might be feasible to have 9 seperate shortcut plugins going to programs, but it would be cumbersome to code the xml I think.
Guest midnight Posted June 12, 2003 Report Posted June 12, 2003 you can in a way, there is a programs plugin yes, and this does work (kind of) i did tests on this and it wasnt all that useable, i was trying to copy off the 7650 screen. Basically you just put 3 program plugins one below the other, easy really, but here is the problem.... Plugins remember which icon is selected, and so, say you move along the first line to the third icon, then move downto the next line, it will skip to the first icon, and no matter where you move on this row, when you press up to go to the top row again, it will skip to the third icon, cos it remembers which one was selected (if you get what i mean) the best way of doing this would be to talk to someone who knows about plugin creation and makes a single plugin that does all this or you.
Guest midnight Posted June 12, 2003 Report Posted June 12, 2003 errrr, unless you do it in html of course, so you have a normal homescreen, that then links to a html page, which has this layuout.
Guest Mort Posted June 12, 2003 Report Posted June 12, 2003 The "Recent Programs" Plugin was is the shortcuts plugin i was referring to.. sorry for the confusion  Yeah HTML could work lovely... but that wouldnt allow me to have an appointments plugin underneath i don't think. And yeah i see what you mean about having the 3 rows of program plugins... it would work well in theory, but its another microsoftism... too bloody helpful  If theres anyone out there who can write a decent interface with programmable button positions i.e. Nokia 7650, Palm Screens etc. Im sure you would make alot of people happy
Guest madu Posted June 12, 2003 Report Posted June 12, 2003 I'm sure there are more important and useful plugins that can be made, that would ADD something to the phone instead of just building on the original, allready availible ones... I know your annoyance and desire to build make this homescreen, but IMHO plugin coders will be reluctant to take this up.. I for one have at least 3 good ideas, but my C++ skills are non-existant... Just my 2 p anyway.
