NGage vs. GBA

Nokia's head of entertainment and media, Ilkka Raiskinen, has attacked Nintendo's GBA in today's Dow Jones, accusing the system of failing to appeal to adult demographics, and has revealed some details of the development business model for N-Gage.

"GameBoy is for 10-year-olds," Raiskinen is quoted as saying. "If you're 20 or 25 years old, it's probably not a good idea to draw a GameBoy out of your pocket on a Friday night in a public place." Nokia would have us believe, of course, that the N-Gage will be a far more socially acceptable piece of kit.

Here's the rest of the story from The Register

To be perfectly honest I'd much rather pull out an SPV, looks much better than both, plays GBA games (Albeit slowly), AND does not cost nearly as much to develop for!!!

Add all the extras like camera, movie playing, calender, etc. etc. there's no competition.

I guess I should also mention that I do still own a GBA as well  ...

Nothing wrong with the GBA, I've got one and I'm 31!

Seriously though, not sure what Nokia are trying to achieve, the NGage is awful to look at and it will be too expensive to buy having both a phone and games console in there. Can't compete with £90 for a GBA SP.

I agree, SPV is much better.

man, i wouldn't pull n-gage out of my pocket - couldn't fit the bugger in there to begin with!

I think the gba sp is a lovely looking piece of kit, and does the job well. i'm happy to pull that out. n-gage looks like the b*stard son of a sega gamegear and a 3g phone

can't believe nokia are so stoopid with their marketing, how cld u let someone senior say something so blatantly bitchy? surely the product ought to talk for itself, and so far most reviewers don't seem to be impressed...

When spv has decent cpu and graphics chip, it'll kick ass. but not just yet me thinks, wasn't designed as a a dedicated game player.. but i'd much rather have an spv in my pocket then anything else right now, except perhaps winona ryders' hands.

I predict a rapid death for the Ngage.

Now, what would happen if Nintendo and a phone company joined forces to produce a phone that could run GBA carts? That could be pretty cool.

But then I have a real dislike for nintendo. So I hope they don't.

I thought someone had made a (VERY slow) emulator ? It was more showing the possibilty rather than anything else? Anyway, I know that there is definitely a GB emulator which rocks!

Also seems like the NGage will be machine specific, can't port anything over!

As ever, me being far too excited about that which doesn't exist!

I must admit, having seen those Matricx posters in the Underground I'm inclined to want one too, but for two things. 1) Where the hell could I put it and 2) Where the hell could I get one?

Seeing as neither are going to be answered soon (Can't grow extra walls and your thread revealed no answers) I'll have to live without.

Only thing the NGage has going for it...it's a Nokia, which bizarrely means some people will just have to buy one (god knows why though!) For the record, I won't be one of them :D I can't really see there's a huge market for it either. Having said that i'm not a big Nintendo fan either - they seem to stick their head in the sand on a lot of issues, like insisting on using carts for the N64/weird discs on the gamecube because they're paranoid about piracy (even though it doesn't seem to have dented Sony's profits!). I've also found most Nintendo games far too "cuddly" (perhaps Japanese oriented?) as opposed to realistic, but that's just my opinion

I did hear rumours of a handheld playstation - it will be interesting if that comes out; the gameboy might have some real competition.
