I read today, that out of the 420 million mobile phones sold worldwide this year, 170 thousand are running Microsoft OS

Presumeably, this includes devices like the O2 XDA, as well as Smartphones, and if it's true, then MS have got a hell of a long way to go :!:

I did a web search to try and find out more about the Sendo thing. Wound up wading through dozens of interesting but irrelevant pages (as one does!) and saw the figure of 70,000 used repeatedly - that's for SPV sales worldwide. But given the way sales are recorded, it's probably an upper limit - remember that there's a "14 day" rule which goes back to analogue days and patchy coverage. If you buy a phone you can take it back within 14 days for a full refund (on the hardware) no questions asked. So, 70,000 includes sales that made it out of the shop for less than a fortnight. These "14 day phones" used to get sold-on cheap to Orange employees as a "perk" - but the prices seem to have taken a sudden hike since January. And at the same time, there also seems to be a busy trade in exporting these "grey" phones. A quick check with my contact in the second user-trade of which "14 day" phones are available on an "export only" basis shows that the source for many of them would seem to be... Orange.
