Guest nickcornaglia Posted June 17, 2003 Report Posted June 17, 2003 Hey...I made a big mistake! I sold my SPV here in the US and bought a Samsung i700 under Verizon CDMA and I hate it for some reason. I was a PPC user and a T-Mobile PPC-Phone Ed. user in the past and love the extra functionality that it gives. But the battery on this phone stinks, I cant see the screen outdoors very well. I have to use the larger battery to get any decent time out of it and it makes the phone WAY too heavy. Other than that it's great but I want my Smartphone back!!! I have 8 more days to take it back for a full refund and not have to stay in my service contract. Alien Wireless is selling tanagers for $550 with discounts and I need advice.... :?: Has anyone heard any of the latest scoop if T-Mobile will carry a Smartphone soon? :?: If so, will it be the SPVx or a new undisclosed model? :?: Should I get the Tanager now and be done with it? :?: If I get the Tanager and T-Mobile comes out with the same model, could I upgrade the phone with T-Mobile's update? I know my questions require much speculation but your experienced advice is appreciated. Thanks. Nick
Guest nobznss Posted June 17, 2003 Report Posted June 17, 2003 I've been watching about this too being a T-Mobile customer myself. However I don't want a phone that T-Mobile will have. I bought a 3650 about 3 months before it was released in the states, and got rid of it because T-mobile started carrying it. Last I heard T-Mobile had "shelfed" the whole thing. I'm not sure for how long though. According to most of the articles I've read T-Mobile wants to wait for more developments to happen before they start carrying it. To me, that means that they won't be carrying anything until SP 2003 comes out. That's not confirmed at all, just speculation. I've seen Tanagers from the Phillipines for much cheaper than $525. I've seen them go for as little as $450. Of course that's an E-Bay auction. Thought about doing it myself, but never did. Hope this information helps.
Guest nickcornaglia Posted June 17, 2003 Report Posted June 17, 2003 Or should I just wait for this????i600.gif
Guest nobznss Posted June 17, 2003 Report Posted June 17, 2003 You know what I'm waiting for? The Asus phone that's supposed to come out at the end of 2003 or beginning of 2004. It comes with SP 2003 and is rumored to have bluetooth (though I hear all the new phones will.) The other option is to go with the Mitac phone that's suppoed to come out around the end of July. The phone is a mammoth though, but it's a flip if you're into that.
Guest nickcornaglia Posted June 17, 2003 Report Posted June 17, 2003 I take it back...I'll take the Mitac.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted June 17, 2003 Report Posted June 17, 2003 The Mitac is due out in a few weeks (i want, i also love the i600, shame about a missing integrated camera though)
Guest nickcornaglia Posted June 17, 2003 Report Posted June 17, 2003 Mono....did you have an opportunity to see a size comparison of both the i600 and the Mitac? Are they the same size or is the Mitac bigger? Verizon here in the US will probably get the i600 soon. And I can probably get a Mitac once they are available while I still have my T-Mobile service. Problem is, I have to choose wether or not I want to stick with Verizon by the end of this week or be stuck in a 2 year contract.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted June 17, 2003 Report Posted June 17, 2003 I've never physically seen an i600 unfortunately. However i'd say it looks slightly wider than the Mitac (which i have played with), and about the same length/depth.
Guest spacemonkey Posted June 17, 2003 Report Posted June 17, 2003 Not sure about the other one, but the Mitac is a fairly comparable size and feel to the GD87 camera phone so you should be able to find that in some stores and manhandle it to see what a Mitac's gonna be like. The mitac keeps getting hassled for being big, but really closed it's a little smaller than the SPV and that's when size matters... opened, yes it's larger than the SPV but then, you gain a really nice large keypad...
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted June 17, 2003 Report Posted June 17, 2003 Very true, Spacemonkey. However unfortunately there is no GD87 in the US :/
Guest spacemonkey Posted June 17, 2003 Report Posted June 17, 2003 damn... didn't think of that... I always forget that their cell phone industry is nuts...
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted June 17, 2003 Report Posted June 17, 2003 Yep...how many different transmission standards do you American's have over there now?
Guest nobznss Posted June 17, 2003 Report Posted June 17, 2003 You know there's so many that I've lost count, but it seems that some of the US companies are beginning to conform. Slowly but surely AT&T seems to be changing their service, but I'm not sure Sprint or Verizon ever will not to mention smaller companies like Cricket. It's a shame though. Oh, and I think we should have some kind of poll deciding whether we should have a US section. I'm not sure there are very many US SPV owners... or at least not enough to have an entire forum to ourselves. Don't get me wrong, it'd be great, but I question the practicality.
Guest McHale Posted June 18, 2003 Report Posted June 18, 2003 I just picked up a Nokia 6800 to hold me over until the Smartphones hit and you know what, while the keyboard is faster for some things, I sometimes revert back to the T9 with the standard phone keypad. On T-Mobile, Cingular, or AT&T, GSM coverage is about the same. T-Mobile has the best GPRS deal I've seen and would highly recommend it. As far as smartphones here in the US, I'm waiting for the first phone that has Smartphone 2003 w/ integrated camera and am going with that. I need the ability to have WI-FI with my phone (hey Microsoft, SDIO, ever heard of it?) and need the integrated camera. If it weren't for those, I'd pick up the Tanager from Alien Wireless. The Tanager is an awesome phone (played with one a week ago or so) and performed better than I had expected. I'd take that PPC phone back while you can. -Mc
Guest nickcornaglia Posted June 19, 2003 Report Posted June 19, 2003 Yep...how many different transmission standards do you American's have over there now? GSM...CDMA...and TDMA as far as I know. GSM is still the baby and CDMA is still the majority under verizon. TDMA should just dissappear!
Guest nickcornaglia Posted June 19, 2003 Report Posted June 19, 2003 I'd take that PPC phone back while you can. Â It will be 2004 by the time 2003 devices get here in the US at a decent price. I would love a Mitac today...but I'm not going to wait three months for some Tiawaneese gentleman to sell me one for $900. There will be better devices out by then and hopefully T-Mobile USA will have their own. The Tanager is the way to go for me today. If I can get a new one between $400 and $500...I'll be set!
Guest nickcornaglia Posted June 19, 2003 Report Posted June 19, 2003 By the way...the PPC phone is GONE and all of my money refunded! I'm using a crappy Motorola C322 until I get my smartphone!
Guest nobznss Posted June 19, 2003 Report Posted June 19, 2003 So did you end up getting the Tanager?
Guest nickcornaglia Posted June 19, 2003 Report Posted June 19, 2003 Still waiting for Alien Wireless to get back to me. Do you know any for sale....and not at the $675 current ebay prices? Used and in really good condition is fine as well.
Guest nobznss Posted June 19, 2003 Report Posted June 19, 2003 There's one on e-bay that I know about. I've talked with this guy a few times. He's in the Philipines, and I would as him if he'd be willing to have a "buy it now" for around $500 (that's about what he quoted me.) That's probably your best bet. He only has 1 feedback, but I can almost guarentee you that he's not going to do anything bad. He won't roll you. I have talked to a few other guys that know him pretty well and they say that he's great. I also talked to one of the people that he sold another phone to and he said he got it no problem. Obviously use your own disgression. I think it could be a pretty good deal. Of course it's a SMART phone, but it's all good if you ask me. Anyway, hope this helps.
Guest axe Posted June 19, 2003 Report Posted June 19, 2003 Some info specific to HOLLAND / NETHERLANDS -I'm told that T-mobile will be starting SPV (canary) sales soon, and at that same moment Orange will start selling the SPVx (tanager). -If you get GPRS through T-mobile, make sure to buy enough MB's in your monthly bundle coz if you go over your bundle you have to pay ridiculous ammounts of cash per MB... in Holland, Orange is the better GPRS choice.
Guest nickcornaglia Posted June 19, 2003 Report Posted June 19, 2003 T-Mobile in the US is now offering unlimited GPRS for only $19.99 So that wont be a problem
