Does this sound like a hoax?

This was just posted on the MS.public.smartphone forum.

The Daddy said:-

"Smartphone 2002 Firmware v1.47"

"I'm currently evaluating the Smartphone v1.47 firmware on the SPV, is this firmware publicly available or is it an interim release before v1.6 (which is due out at the end of June)?"

I thought the next version was v1.5, and if you were in a position to be evaluating it, it seems a very strange thing to post :?

Or am I being over sceptical after the recent hoax

If the "Guest" has got the version number right then the answer to his question is no.

But who is he evaluating it for?

He did. And this one's not interesting. It's not elaborate, it's not carefully documented and supported by an equally fake "I am too!" post, and nobody seems to be asking you to DO anything. If there's extensive documentation available online about people claiming to be trialling non-existent firmware (as there was with the other hoax) so that methodologies can be compared... then I'm not aware of it. (And I'm quite HAPPY to be unaware of it. )

Hoaxes aren't generally very interesting. They're just a nuisance. It's the ones that seem to follow different patterns to the norm that ARE interesting - if the way they're carried out is different... so too may be the reason behind them.

I used to get "hit" by one or other of the "standard" hoaxes about every three months - "Warning, new virus!" alerts... even one that claimed the makers of Tampax were putting glass-fibre in their products to increase sales! SO I keep a "standard reply" in my draughts folder, explaining what a hoax mail IS, why it's like a Macro virus, where you can check the claims out (snopes.com is good) what characteristoics should raise your suspicions... and I'd send it back as a reply to whoever had passed on the hoax, with the suggestion that they in turn forwarded it to everyone they had passed the original hoax to. Seems to be working - it's created a "hoax free zone" of people who know how to deal with this kind of mail. I get one a year now, if that.

Ouch big ron >wince<

If he's evaluating 1.47, i imagine he's best placed to tell US when it's coming out and what it contains. Unless by "evaluating" he means "bootlegging", in which case he probably shouldn't be advertising it. Daddy?

Anyone know how to get my perpetual motion machine working again? seems to be kaputt.
