Guest DamianJauregui Posted June 18, 2003 Report Posted June 18, 2003 Hi all, I have been trying [for a few weeks now] to find out when a Flash player would appear for the SPV and finally got a response from Macromedia. To summarise, they are saying that they require a minimum $150,000 investment up front for their SDK License Programme, i.e. you pay them $150k to build it yourself! :shock: Anyway, here's their letter. Anyone got this kinda cash around to invest for an interesting project? :lol: Damian. ------------------------------------------------------ 6/18/2003 Dear Damian Jauregui, Thank you for your interest in Macromedia’s Flash Player SDK License Programme. Please accept our apologies for the delay in our response. This commercial programme is designed for third parties who have met particular technical, financial and business criteria. Macromedia would like you to know that this commercial programme has a minimum upfront license payment of $150,000. If you believe you will not be able to meet this requirement, please let us know. We are in the process of evaluating your request and will be processing it in the order in which it was received. You will receive a decision from our evaluation team in due course. Due to high demand for the programme this make take several days or weeks depending on the size of our current request queue to process your application. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Your patience is greatly appreciated. Regards, ------------------------------------------------------ I have the lady's name, but probably shouldn't post it online as it might get me in to trouble or something. Damian.
Guest James Posted June 18, 2003 Report Posted June 18, 2003 well i think its a little out of my league.... so is that a no we are not getting a flash player?
Guest DamianJauregui Posted June 19, 2003 Report Posted June 19, 2003 I would think so, unless MS has already put up the cash, but I doubt it.
Guest axe Posted June 19, 2003 Report Posted June 19, 2003 don't get it .... there's a flash player for the PocketPC... can't be THAT much work to convert it ...
Guest James Posted June 19, 2003 Report Posted June 19, 2003 thats the point mate! its may not be much work but Macromedia want the money for a licience so someone can do so!
Guest DamianJauregui Posted June 19, 2003 Report Posted June 19, 2003 Does anyone know who developed the pocketPC version? Was it Macromedia themselves? They are probably looking at the numbers, i.e. 5 million PDAs = worth while market. 25,000 SPVs = mot worth anything. I would like to think that someone in Macromedia would think to themselves "Hey, maybe if we put in some effort [like we used to do before we ruled the world] then it could increase the market for SPVs and also make Macromedia look damn good and progressive!", but then again, as Alice once said, "We're not in Kansas now Toto!". :lol:
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted June 19, 2003 Report Posted June 19, 2003 It's all a matter of progression really. Windows CE was fairly well established by the time PPC was released, and PDA's were fairly popular. Macromedia released their PPC flash player a little over 2 years ago, how many different PDA models are there (HP has 5-6 alone). By the end of this year we should have 4 or 5 devices on multiple networks across the world. Once handset, the SPV, has sold (closer to in Europe) 40,000 units in 7 months. So with 4 handsets in the next two years you're looking at closer to 2million units by the time SmartPhone is as old as PPC. That's without taking into account of new devices over the next two years.
Guest kingbing Posted June 19, 2003 Report Posted June 19, 2003 Is there an authorised flash player for Linux. Or the rather more interesting question, is there an open source player for Linux?
Guest DamianJauregui Posted June 19, 2003 Report Posted June 19, 2003 I know what you're thinking but there's been a whole load of issues lately with third party companies developing players for Quicktime and RealMedia files, but not signing up to the various licensing programs [the $150k kind I presume]. If you were to re-write and compile an SPV version from the Linux Flash player then I think that you would have Macromedia knocking on your door for their $150k VERY quickly! Damian.
Guest DamianJauregui Posted June 19, 2003 Report Posted June 19, 2003 I just found this, it's the C++ source code for the Linux version of the Flash 4 player. Any use? Is there a 'slight' chance that we could see it implemented on a Smartphone? :lol:swf4parse.zip
Guest Rob.P Posted June 19, 2003 Report Posted June 19, 2003 If you go to the Flash forum on the Macromedia website and post in one of the threads dealing with this there is a possibility that they will develop a player for the smartphone if there are enough requests. Also in the meantime if you have a copy of Director there is a program that will convert your embedded Flash/Director movie into C++/C (whatever) which you can then compile (using the SDK and Visual Embedded) and and it will run on the phone. There are a number of threads that have these issues in them with links and wotnot.
Guest Richie M Posted June 19, 2003 Report Posted June 19, 2003 I think your all missing the main point tho; Flash will run very slow on the current Smartphones :lol:
Guest Rob.P Posted June 19, 2003 Report Posted June 19, 2003 Why is that? Is it because of the way the phone draws the graphics?
Guest TANKERx Posted June 19, 2003 Report Posted June 19, 2003 It shouldn't be that slow, surely? I've seen it run on a Nokia 9210 and that has a much slower processor.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted June 19, 2003 Report Posted June 19, 2003 And the limitations in processor speed (CPU and GPU), try running a flash animation on a P133 and then think how that would run on your phone...
Guest Arisme Posted June 20, 2003 Report Posted June 20, 2003 FYI, the Pocket PC Flash player already works ... just that it's quite a pain to install :wink: * first, you'll have to sign it with a privilegied certificate - that's the most painful point but I sort of explained this method back to the old days when we were fighting with the signature stuff 8) - anyone who wants to understand which function call makes this necessary is welcome, I don't really have time to spend on this :wink: * then, you'll have to register it to the system (you can use regsvrce from the development kit or call DllRegisterServer yourself) * at this point you have a kinda working player, but without any input support - you'll need to write your own "wrapper" to propagate some events, which is fairly easy to do if you've read my tutorial on how to enhance the Contact app carefully 8)
Guest DamianJauregui Posted June 20, 2003 Report Posted June 20, 2003 * first, you'll have to sign it with a privilegied certificate * then, you'll have to register it to the system (you can use regsvrce from the development kit or call DllRegisterServer yourself) * at this point you have a kinda working player, but without any input support - you'll need to write your own "wrapper"... Uhmmm, I was thinking/hoping of a more simple CAB file install for us lesser mortals :oops:
Guest drblow Posted June 20, 2003 Report Posted June 20, 2003 Couldn't we all chip in & just pay macromedia??!! Surely there is 15000 people who would splash £10 for flash player?? I know I would! :lol: :D
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted June 20, 2003 Report Posted June 20, 2003 8000 members x £20 == £160,000 ;p
Guest warren Posted June 20, 2003 Report Posted June 20, 2003 I think it would be more benificial to lobby Microsoft to include smartphone in the port of flash player 6.X The opportunities for mobile applications and interactive advertising and microsites will have a real impact on the content available for the platform. Remember 150K is the equivalent to Three good salaries yet could open up the amount of development on the smartphone by huge amounts! A mobile flash campaign would be the way to go. Hey MoDaCo Guys how do you feel about this?? You are best positioned to run this campaign and the fact that most of you are MVP's means you have a direct channel to the people that matter. The platform needs a boost and this is one way to give it the edge it needs to see its sales increase. Think of the demonstrations of flas site on a mobile phone the 2Advanced.com guys would wet them selves for the opportunity im sure. I know i would!!!
