Sorry if this has been covered b4, but I've just had a thought.....

When we received the last update, Streaming audio and video went tit's up right?!

with me so far? ok.....

Well. The next Orange update is supposed to be around the end of June if the latest posts etc are to be believed....

Is'nt it a coincidence that most peoples GPRS unlimited promos end around that time also?!

Like I said, just a theory, but perhaps orange are trying to save some bandwidth here.

I agree 100% with your theory, and it was discussed quite a lot back in March. Here's one thread about it, (see Page 2) but I'm sure there were many more.

Just a tad annoying don't ya think :?

This update was meant to be out beggining of June to, and i think it might well be for the GPRS reason that they have delayed it

It works if you flip it around too.....

Perhaps (and its a big perhaps lol) Orange have been having probs with the new update, hence the reason they've delayed it, and hence the reason the GPRS promo has been extended. Pacifies the customer a tad, and limits thier comeback should they moan. 'Ohh what a wicked web we weave....' blah blah blah.

Once again, I agree with you

Here's what I wrote earlier today:-

I've stayed out of this thread, but my theory, is that Orange will continue with the promotion, until they come up with some means of the user checking how much data they have used :?:

I reckon there'll be a GPRS data counter in the next major update, or at least a free number to ring to check your useage, and THEN they'll stop the promotion.

If there's no way of checking your useage, and you're getting heavilly chraged for going over your bundle, then you really have got grounds for moaning. I suspect Orange know this, and would rather wait until they have something in place, rather than have hundreds and hundreds of irate phone calls.

I suspect "the letter confirming it" came out because the Update was due out, and it's now been delayed, so the promotion has continued :?:

This is just my theory

I've never quoted myself before 8)

Oohhhh freaky! (cue Twilight Zone music! lol). Great minds think alike and all that!

Amazing what ya miss when you've been 'off forum' for a while. I agree with you, there's no way that orange can justify it's users having to pay for GPRS usage counter software. They should provide it, or at least give it's users a means of checking their usage, by a phone number like you said. Hell, they can do it for inclusive minutes, so why not data as well. This is especially true for something as data intensive (in GPRS terms anyhow) as the SPV, and, correct me if I'm wrong, is one of the main selling points of the phone in the 1st place.

If Orange are obliged to provide a GPRS counter, local or remote, does this mean they are also obliged to provide an SMS counter (for example, i get free SMS's with my tarrif, and have no way to tell when i have used them all)?

Two other factors spring to mind... firstly the considerable problems is having making GPRS work at all right now, and the current climate of litigation that hovers around the SPV. Who's to say that Sendo (who only a couple of months ago were making "we're only going to call Orange employees as witnesses in our suit against Microsoft" noises) aren't capable of pulling a few new surprises out of the bag - like suing for "software piracy" as well as "hardware piracy"? That being a possibility, they may simply be delaying things while they make absolutely sure that there are NO grounds for litigation - like including a patch that replaces some code that might cause problems with rewritten code that won't? This is "widest speculation", but then... so's most of the rest of this thread. Punctuality has never been a strong point with Orange (or Microsoft!) - I'd be suspicious if they released something on time - a VERY strange thing if it ever happened!

Speculation is the cool thing about Conspiracy theory's. They're normally always based on Conjecture, speculation and most often, coincidence. Gives you a lot of scope to use one's imagination. A bit like horoscopes then, now that I think about it

As for the SMS/GPRS/Minutes counter, I could go into a long are boring dirge about unit costs and the like, but my fingers ache (early morning bass session) and I really dont wanna type any more. :D

Is everybody suffering from it? Mine's working ok, thought I might have missed something.

As far as I'm aware, everyone is yeah. Did u apply that last Orange update? If ya did, and your streaming audio/video is still working, I hate you! (just kidding before you consider liable).

Feel free to hate  yeah got the latest update but my regular radio streams still work fine, must be a fluke then.

One other Q rob... Are you still on the GPRS promo, or has it finished for you yet? Just wondering if the streaming probs are in any way connected to the promo.

I KNOW the streaming radio problem is caused by the major UK update :!:

I've gone back on an SPV to the first ROM version (last November) and it works no probs with no buffering. Applied the update, and it plays for a 5 or 6 seconds at a time and then buffers. I then flashed the phone back to the old ROM, and streaming radio worked fine again :!:

I've also tried the recent "Smart" ROM from the Philippines and there was no buffering with that one :!:

Yeah I'm going through what the rest are, which is it keeps turning up on my bill as being extended, I haven't phoned to find out what CS will say about it, cause they'll ptobably say the same to me as to the others.

I'm not too bothered though it is an essential for my lifestyle so GPRS costs on a PAYG basis have already been tailored into my lifestyle budget for when/if they kick in.

I think that any self respecting operator should either provide or insist on the provision of a GPRS counter.

It is feasible to keep track of sent SMS messages, but who can be 100% sure of how many Kb a single connection has cost?

I'm currently trialling the GPRS counter from that companythat does one (can't remember the name right now) and it seems good, but overkill for what I actually want. Symbian has it right by putting it in the Call History so I can see what each individual connection has taken, with a total provided also.

Ultimately, all I want to know is how much has gone in and how much has gone out.

The constant buffering during video streaming has annoyed me for months now but I don't think it has anything to do with the GPRS network as the quality of service that is asked for by the phone and given by the GPRS network hasn't changed. I think its more like the software update itself is causing problems with the whole phone including the radio side. There are too many pauses, messages being missed and the unwelcome appearance of the hourglass. It's almost as if the processor is sometimes struggling to keep things together. I'm sure things were better before the update.

I have read that the P800 doesn't buffer during 24K video streaming :x So does that tell you there is a conspiracy against SPV users only.

With packet switching it simply wouldn't make sense to reduce the data rate as this is done anyway by a packet controller if things get too busy. If there is enough GPRS capacity on the cell then there should be no reason why the mobile cant transfer data at its full capability.

My hope is that the next version of software will improve GPRS for the SPV but I believe this would be down to acknowledging a problem rather than ending a conspiracy. Its doubt whether Orange are even aware of this - has anybody asked them ?

I think if somebody was to dig deep enough into the phones software and processes they may find a solution as there's probably not much causing it? Don't quote me on that though...

My guess is that the next update will co-incide with the launch of the E100. The E100 will more than likely have a few tweaks to its OS - and Orange will mirror these in the update.
