usually an mp3 contains full music, where midi contains nothing more than note information. Because of the key difference between these two it is possible to convert midi to mp3 but NOT vice versa....

You'd want to convert to .wav though, not midi (if you're planning on making a ringtone).

SmartPhone also has really bad midi support, midi0 only...

You can't covert mp3 to midi - midi (musical instrument digital interface) does not contain any sound, it is coded instructions to other musical devices to play a note at a set pitch, velocity, length etc & is used by devices which have access to sound banks.

Well, if anyone find software which does do this - I WANNA KNOW ABOUT IT!!

there are plenty of programs out there that do this, it's just that by the nature of converting an analogue track (I know it's digitised, but you know what I mean) back to instruments, it generally sounds crap

writing the music in midi is the only way to get good midi

do a search on google for 'convert mp3 to midi' if you want to see what's out there

Interesting muff, I'm quite musically inclined and I've been midi'ing for years. If this stuff ever becomes usable, it would make an interesting audio compression technique. Extremely complicated maths behind the decoding of the sound, we still can't get a computer to pick out a melody to the level of a two-year old child. Working with a track with multiple instruments has to be a long while away.

But for what the poster is looking for, forget it. Just convert to wav instead, it will be a larger file, but it's infinitely simpler and it'll sound better too.

Converting an mp3 to a midi is like trying to convert a Raster(bitmap) into a Vector Image. Whilst this can be done fairly easily and effectively with images, with audio files it is much more complex.

I believe it can be done, as i recall finding some software designed to do this a few months ago, but at present i doubt you'd be able to find software which is really any good at it.
