Guest nobznss Posted June 21, 2003 Report Posted June 21, 2003 Last night the new Harry Potter book was released here in the states. I tell you what, there were a BUNCH of people in one of our local bookstores. We're talking about 300 or more just waiting for the new book to be released. My wife (who's a big Potter fan) wanted to go, and being the wonderful husband that I am  I decided to go with her. The line winded through the building and out the door like 200 yards. There was ABSOLUTELY NO way I was going to wait there for a book. It's just a book!! At any rate, is it that crazy out there in England, or do people not care as much? Don't get me wrong, I like the series; very interesting books I just don't think anything's worth waiting in line for like 4 hours (of course the exception is the new Asus phone coming out  )
Guest Gorskar Posted June 21, 2003 Report Posted June 21, 2003 Mad - totally mad. I'll leave it a few days until the madness ends, then I can buy it and enjoy it at my leisure.
Guest nobznss Posted June 21, 2003 Report Posted June 21, 2003 That's what we ended up doing... well sort of. We just went back this morning around 9:00 and there wasn't a soul there. They all stayed up last night and were sleeping in. Now we've got it, and my wife is enjoying it as we speak, or write.
Guest Big Ron - No Longer a Mem Posted June 21, 2003 Report Posted June 21, 2003 It was my son's school sports day here today. Hundreds of young men milling about in white sports gear... clutching brand new copies of Harry Potter V, that they'd either bought at midnight (a LOT of bookshops stayed open - many held free childrens' parties!) or in our case had been bought after queuing outside the local bookstore at 7.00am when it opened (a free breakfast included with every purchase!) and some that had been delivered by Amazon with the post around 9.00am. A sports day, right - "track and field events" - but the conversation wasn't about who jumped highest, who ran fastest. It was about who'd read most pages (those who'd bought the book at midnight had an unfair advantage there) and the MAIN topic of conversation was "WHO DIES?" Nobody had reached that part yet, and guesses were evenly divided between Hagrid and Sirius Black. My son's now around 150 pages into the tome, and we had arguments at bedtime - "Please, can't I read just ONE more chapter?" "How many pages is that?" "35" " NO!" He's made three phone calls to friends to compare notes on the story so far (and to see who has got furthest) So, I suppose you could say it's quite popular over here. For what it's worth, JK Rowling spent her formative childhood years in Chipping Sodbury - almost within sight of Orange's Head Office outside Bristol. Her Dad worked at the BAC works in nearby Filton. I believe that the name "Harry Potter" was borrowed from a lad who lived in the same street.
Guest Vector Posted June 22, 2003 Report Posted June 22, 2003 Can i tell everybody who dies :D i skipped to that bit, but i 've never read the book, jus twanted a good way to pi$$ people off  now i know
Guest nobznss Posted June 22, 2003 Report Posted June 22, 2003 Don't tell anyone, just incase someone is actually reading it. I tell you what I think though (no I haven't read it so I have no clue) but I think it's Sirius Black. Just my thoughts. Not sure though.
