ok... I'm gonna get a new car and have around 10,000 to spend. Have always loved my convertibles and have narrowed it down to 2....

What do you think ?

(1) MGF

(2) MX5

(3) Bloody hairdressers cars, all of them

(4) Lotus Elan

Added a new one !

I would say the mazda. I have a mazda miata (I think the same as the one you're looking at) and it's a great car in my opinion. And who can beat an American car company?? (Mazda is owned by Ford.)

Shame that a Boxster or S2000 are out of your price range... not sure there's any real nice roadsters that aren't 'hairdresser' for around 10k

If you are set on one of those 2, the MX-5 is allegedly the better car...

How about a new shape MR-2? A friend has one and it's pretty nice....

The new MR2 is nice, but just out of my price range. havnt really seen them (unthrashed / reasonable mileage ones anyway) for much less that £13K.

Whats an S2000 ? Is that the honda ?

Sure is. Car's are cheap out there! You can't even look twice at any kind of sports car here in the states for less than about $20k USD so what's that... around 13k pounds? It doesn't matter what kind! $20k is the BARE minimum. Those S2000's cost around $30k+ out here. I should just buy one in the UK and import it, it would be cheaper!!!

The steering wheel would be on the right side tho...

The 'right' side, which is the 'right side'

It'd be alright to drive close to the curb. Plus mine would be the only one in the states that way. Course, not so sure that the police would like that very much.

Avoid MGFs - they look nice but are crap inside IMO and the gearbox is horrible - it feels like you're dragging the stick through thick soup when you change :D Build quality isn't up to much either, although better than a VX220 where the door cards wobble as you slam the door. I have heard good things about MX-5s, but they are a tad hairdresser... S2000s on the other hand - mmmmmm...donuts (and not the type you eat)

I want to change my vote to the Lotus!!! Isn't that expensive???

Out of the 3 I'd say Lotus. Mazda is a girlie car in my oppinion and as noted above MG build quality etc is questionalbe. Lotus at least have their experience.

Toyota Celica? Not cheap I know. BMW 3 series? Peugeot? Fiat Pininforina?

Martin, so you going to drive nice and slow on the island then

How about the Alfa Romeo Spyder ?

But two seater convertibles are all Hairdresser - why not a Saab, Audi or even BMW ?

Mmmmmmm, Saab 9-3 Turbo convertible, v nice!

New A4 cab is nice but expensive, old (style before current) BMW cabs are OK, Mother in Law has an M3 Evo SMG Cab

I voted for the Lotus Elan, it's a great car but probably a bit more scary on the maintenance front if anything goes wrong with it. On the plus side they're supposed to be faster than a Lotus Esprit for point to point driving through twisty country roads... :-D

The MX5 is definitely a bit of a girly car (one of my female flatmates has one...) although they reputedly handle very nicely (balanced and easy to throw around) and are easy to have fun in at sensible speeds (they're not exactly quick...).

If you want real fun go for the Lotus, if you want cheap fun go for the Mazda, if you want to become a hairdresser go for the MG unless you can get a TF...

To go off in a completely different direction, if money was no option, and I had working eyes, I would get meself a Koenigsegg.

if you like the Maxda, try the MX-6. I have a 2.5i V6. For 10 grand you'll get a very good quality one. They dont make them anymore but they are on the same floorplan as the Probe, and the engine uses parts that are still being used on the Mondeo V6 so they are cheap to run.

Cheers for the comments guys. It looks like I'm gonna end up with a hairdressers car whatever I choose !!! I like the idea of the lotus, but for the money, its gonna be a fairly old one and, as mentioned, a bit scary on the maintennance costs !

I must admit, I hadn't heard any bad reports about build quality etc on the MGF, and if I get a VVC model surely thats slightly less "hairdressery" than a standard one ? I have driven one before and they are pretty quick and very tasty on the handling side of things. Might have to test an MX5 see what they are like.....

And yes I probably will have to drive it slowly awarner  especially if the old twats that live here get there way and get all the speed limits reduced to 30 everywhere
