Guest awarner [MVP] Posted June 23, 2003 Report Posted June 23, 2003 Just been dumped a 300mhz dell to wipe and reinstall everything for a friend Got all the drivers from the Dell site  Anyway the problem I have is that when ever the mouse moves the internal speaker clicks. I presume it could be a driver error causing this but not sure. I have seen this before but I cannot remember how to fix it :? Any ideas?
Guest Gorskar Posted June 23, 2003 Report Posted June 23, 2003 Thats a wierd one, and it happens on my old K62 500 from time to time as well. No Idea why.
Guest mattbrown Posted June 23, 2003 Report Posted June 23, 2003 ive had this b4 - mine you ive only encountered it when pc froze - so had to reboot - try also updated mouse drivers
Guest madu Posted June 23, 2003 Report Posted June 23, 2003 Are you using/used external mouse by any chance? I had that thing on a Dell too - a bloody nighmare they are! Bet you're installing 2000 or XP.. Drivers... and check for conflicts Try removing all PCMCIA especially LAN cards. Check BIOS for internal/external devices configs
Guest siu99spj Posted June 23, 2003 Report Posted June 23, 2003 ive had this b4 - mine you ive only encountered it when pc froze - so had to reboot - try also updated mouse driversUsually the clicking when your PC froze was because you were trying to force inputs into the controller when it was still trying to clear its buffer into the CPU (Which it couldn't because the CPU had frozen). It can also happen if you jam 20 or so keys on you keyboard, though its usually a higher pitched beep. Don't think it has anything to do with awarner's problem though. Are you using/used external mouse by any chance? Forgive me for saying, but aren't ALL mice external? :? To be honest I think it'd be kinda hard for me to use my mouse if it was internal! Sorry, awarner, never heard this one before...
Guest madu Posted June 23, 2003 Report Posted June 23, 2003 Forgive me for saying, but aren't ALL mice external? :? To be honest I think it'd be kinda hard for me to use my mouse if it was internal! Unless it is a laptop and you have a joystick or a touchscreen mouse, which in effect is internal. Though I dunno why I assumed it is a laptop...
Guest Big Ron - No Longer a Mem Posted June 23, 2003 Report Posted June 23, 2003 Small world - a friend who is a doctor has just upgraded his surgery's network asked me to wipe the drives of the old systems (REALLY wipe them, to CIA "unrecoverable" specifications so that the confidential medical info is gone for good) and then to find "deserving homes" for three of them. They're Del Optiplex 366's, with Slot-1 Celeron CPUs, memory upgraded to 128meg ("Crucial" brand, too!) and 4 gig hard drives. I wiped 'em, and installed WInXP on all but one (the recipient wanted Win98) They came without mice, keyboards or monitors, but a trip to the local computer fair fixed that - good clean 15" Siemens monitors cost me £15 each, Genius "Smartmice" £1 each and new keyboards £2.50. No need to download any drivers - WinXP identified everything and installed the drivers from CD. (Note, so did "Lindows" - an NT compatible Linux version - which I installed to try it out) No clicking mouse problems. Everything worked perfectly first time.
Guest madu Posted June 23, 2003 Report Posted June 23, 2003 Is it PS/2 or USB (or old COM) mouse? If PS/2 You might want to set USB mouse to disabled in BIOS (not all have that option). If USB mouse - set it to enabled... Maybe some similar tricks in BIOS will solve it if drivers do not.
Guest Big Ron - No Longer a Mem Posted June 23, 2003 Report Posted June 23, 2003 Thinking about it, I remember having problems fitting an Evergreen CPU upgrade to a Dell, and as a result searching their website for some info. Unless I'm confusing them with another company (which isn't at all impossible) they hosted a "User Forum" not unlike Modaco. Using that as an "FAQ-type" resource would probably get you an answer.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted June 23, 2003 Report Posted June 23, 2003 I'm using a PS/2 mouse with win ME yes I know before i get flamed but that's what he has. As for the drivers from the DELL site they are old drivers (they require a floppy to install them  I'll check out the BIOS again and I was thinking of trying an old serial mouse, but that's just avoiding the problem not fixing it :? I'll let you know how I get on, cheers :D
Guest madu Posted June 23, 2003 Report Posted June 23, 2003 Win ME  ok, no flames as requested. I just hope you don't need to get it running on LAN... This in fact could as well be the cause 8)
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted June 23, 2003 Report Posted June 23, 2003 I've got it on LAN and linked to Broadband to get the downloads
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted June 24, 2003 Report Posted June 24, 2003 It turns out that the sound is coming from the modem speaker (the modem will normaly be used for the internet) whenever I play with the settings the sound stops :? I'm going to hunt around for different drivers now, hopefully that will fix it.
Guest madu Posted June 24, 2003 Report Posted June 24, 2003 Check the interrupt the modem is sitting on..
Guest Gorskar Posted June 24, 2003 Report Posted June 24, 2003 Now thats wierd, cause I'm fairly sure that the computer we have that does that from time to time has no modem... It doesnt really bother me though, as its very quiet and its such an old computer I cant really be bothered to mess around with it.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted June 26, 2003 Report Posted June 26, 2003 It was an old ISA modem and now I've been told that he has an external modem and he wants to use that  So after all this time hunting for drivers etc I've just ripped it out  bloody piece of old crap, at least the sounds gone now :)
