Hard Reset Outcome.

Hi,

After unlocking my SPV to install decert apps, I managed to make the phone

stick on the boot screen ( Orange sunrise ).

I imagine I had filled the phone's storage to a point where it couldn't

cope? ( Installed Doom )

Anyway, after following this guide:

http://tinyurl.com/f3sy I managed a hard reset although this bit confused

me:

9) Select "Erase IPSM" and wait for the screen to display "PASSED"

10) Then move to the left with the navigation button and select "END"

Now, however many times I tried to find 'end' , it just wasn't there. I

'passed' the IPSM Erase process, but END was just nowhere to be seen.

In the end, I just pulled the battery and re-booted, leaving the fone stuck

on the sunrise screen, and sulked.

Eventually, it booted, ( 5 mins or so..) and after a backup restore from Orange, I was almost

back to where I began.

The only problem is, the phone is very sluggish now.

Slow to boot/shutdown, and not very receptive.

Has anyone any tips/ideas for me to try before I admit being a meddler, and

send it back to Orange?

My software is: V 1.3.5.6

Many thanks,

Mick.

What you did was reset the phone to factory settings mate (as if left the factory), thats what a hard reset is.

how much slower ist it?

one tip, get a large storage card and put everything you install on tho there!

Crikey..

I thought for a sec I was in a thread ith James Lavelle..

I have a 32MB card which I'm using now..I might have had a 128 by now if I wasn't home ill..

However..The fone seems to boot and shutdown slower.

Whenever I return to the home page, the page appears by means of a 'scroll' rather than instant..You get my meaning?

Kind of progressive.

Access to apps and menus seems to be sluggish.

I'm comparing with my Wife's SPV, which is box standard.

I appreciate I've set back to factory settings, I just can't help but feel I've tainted something by last night's meddling! Is there ANY possibility I may have damaged something?

Or am I literally imagining it?!

There may well be the possibility my Wife's SPV is how it should be, and I may have a faulty one?

Thanks for your reply James.

Try repeating hard reset if it is more sluggish then it was...

It might have been a 'corrupted' hard reset - or better say initialisation after reset.

END command is when you hit left/right in bootloader menu - it has more screens than the one you see. But this is not important step.

The first startup will take LONG. That is because it rebuilds the whole IPSM folder on the phone. When it finally boots, let it find the network and all that, then restart it (power off/on) - this time it should be significantly quicker.

Gotta say mate, this has confused me a little.

Coudl you explain executing END a little more clearly?

I read here that there may not be an END at all with my S/W version?

Yes, there may not be an end. Just continue to hold the power button to boot up and take it from there. And yes I also think another hard reset is a good idea.

As an addendum ( and my apologies for replying to my own post.. ), and just to illustrate the slowness of the phone:

I re-installed Doom succesfully.

The game itself played quite quickly, but the menu options ( sound, graphics etc ) were:

Push Nav key - 5 second pause - action taken.

There are 3 screens in bootloader - one with all Backup/Restore commands an 2 more. One network specific features and other is some more stuff (including END)

END (why not EXIT?) just exits Bootloader Menu (I have version 0.93, newer ones 0.98) and takes the phone into 3color Canary screen as we know it. If you don't hold action key for 1 sec at start, you'll go straight to this screen.

You could not have made your phone any worse by hard reset. Just do it again if you feel it's not right.

PS: Oh yes, bootloaders 0.95 and above only have Erase IPSM command on one screen and some other stuff (maybe) on other screens. But I always used my 0.93 and am happy with it.. You can manually reflash it back to 0.93, but I suggest you don't bother for now.

Ah.

I think my Bootloader is v.97.

There is absolutely nothing on any of the pages, except for Erase IPSM.

This is why I am getting confused as to what to do after Erase IPSM has 'passed' .

I will try to do another hard reset tonight, after pluck up the courage!

To re-iterate, I should.

Go through the hard reset process.

When Erase IPSM has passed, power down the phone with the power button.

Re-boot, and let it do it's thing.

After this, all should be hunky-dory.

= All is not hunky-dory, and I'll feel like a tool again.
