Is there anyway of changing the colour of the clock to make it viewable on on a dark homescreen or is it only possible within a skin????? :?

you need to change XML file. For example in the correct plugin you may have such string , or the same with parameters:

Where #FFFFFF is White. Click homescreen for more info.
