problem with running wmv on media player

i seem to b havin probs with microsoft media player .....when i run a wmv (200k-2.0m)it just seems to be running so slow that i can hear the sound but witness about 2 frames of video. on one of the larger clips (1.5m) media player just showed the first frame but again i could hear it no prob.please will someone help...(could it be a format or codec thing?)
