Guest mark_l_sanders Posted June 27, 2003 Report Posted June 27, 2003 I cannot connect to WAP over a GPRS connection. I can connect to The Internet over GPRS. Are my settings ok: in Data Connections: Internet Connection uses Orange GPRS (the connection itself connects to The Internet, using the 'orangeinternet' access point with the correcto pri/sec DNS settings); WAP connection uses Orange WAP (the connection itself connects to WAP Network using the 'orangewap' access point). Also in Data Connections, Work Connection can only be set to 'None Available'. The latest customer support person at Orange suggests this is WRONG and potentially important. Is he right? When we get to IE, the settings are - Automatic Detection is ON, and the Select Network is set to WAP Network. Now - the same bod at Orange said that whenever you need to connect to an Internet site, you need to set 'Select Network' to 'The Internet', and whenever you want to connect to a WAP site you change it to WAP Network!!!! Somebody please confirm that he's talking rubbish. Isn't the whole point of Auto Detection that IE goes to The Internet or WAP depending on the protocol specified in the url?? Help- why can't i connect to WAP over GPRS?????
Guest martin Posted June 27, 2003 Report Posted June 27, 2003 in Data Connections: Internet Connection uses Orange GPRS (the connection itself connects to The Internet, using the 'orangeinternet' access point with the correcto pri/sec DNS settings); WAP connection uses Orange WAP (the connection itself connects to WAP Network using the 'orangewap' access point).Yep, these GPRS connections are correct for contract SIM. WAP will also require a proxy connection (make sure you have this) Description: Orange WAP Proxy Connects from: The Internet Connects to: WAP network Proxy (name:port): 192.168.71.35 Type: WAP Also in Data Connections, Work Connection can only be set to 'None Available'. The latest customer support person at Orange suggests this is WRONG and potentially important. Is he right? Ignore the work connection. All you need are 'Internet Connection=Orange GPRS' and 'WAP connnection: Orange WAP'. Isn't the whole point of Auto Detection that IE goes to The Internet or WAP depending on the protocol specified in the url??Yep, you are correct. For the SPV: HTTP=APN orangeinternet and WSP=APN orangewap. Help- why can't i connect to WAP over GPRS????? What address are you are trying to connect to ?
Guest mark_l_sanders Posted June 27, 2003 Report Posted June 27, 2003 Ok - I had the Orange WAP Proxy settings as you described it. I'm trying to connect to wsp://orange.multimedia (would you believe!!!) I've connected succesfully to WAP sites ranging from Orange to Yahoo (whoopee) using WAP over Orange CSD WAP, but Never on GPRS. The (ahem) helper on Orange has resent me the SIM updates - I'm restarting now so maybe  that'll help. I doubt it. Orange keep mentioning the dreaded phrase 'faulty handsets'. Have you ever come across a handset that can use GPRS to access the Internet but not WAP??? Thanks foryour response(s)
Guest lazyb5 Posted June 27, 2003 Report Posted June 27, 2003 Hi i just followed a thread from the main forum about settings to give wap over gprs. i was fed up with being charged 3 gbp for 1mb i have configured the phone as the thread said and now when i connect to wsp://orange.multimedia i dont get the G in the signal meter i get 2 arrows this signifies a data call !! The question is what have i done and how much is this costing me ie. 3gbp per mb or 10p per minute or what it loads a hell of a lot slower.
Guest martin Posted June 27, 2003 Report Posted June 27, 2003 Orange keep mentioning the dreaded phrase 'faulty handsets'. Have you ever come across a handset that can use GPRS to access the Internet but not WAP??? Nope. I would goto IE, menu-options-memory clear all histories. Untick 'auto detect' and make 'Select Network=WAP network' Try to access wsp://orange.multimedia and wsp://www.google.com/wml If it still doesn't work. Delete and re-create GPRS connection Orange WAP Description: Orange WAP Connects to: The Internet Access point: orangewap User name: (blank) Password: (blank) Primary DNS: 0.0.0.0 Secondary DNS: 0.0.0.0 IP address: (blank) set WAP Connection: Orange WAP. and recheck the proxy setting. Its unlikely that the PDP context for orangewap is unavailable. Let us know how it goes.
Guest lazyb5 Posted June 27, 2003 Report Posted June 27, 2003 hi martin sorry to but in but i can connect with all the settings you mention and i get the arrows as i said above but how much is it costing me?? thanks for any help and sorry again for butting in
Guest martin Posted June 27, 2003 Report Posted June 27, 2003 hi martin sorry to but in but i can connect with all the settings you mention and i get the arrows as i said above but how much is it costing me?? It depends lazyb5. Are you contract or pre-pay ?
Guest mark_l_sanders Posted June 27, 2003 Report Posted June 27, 2003 lazyb5 - re. cost of connecting to wsp:// sites with orange: they're currently doing a promo of 3 monts free WAP. it's available, afaik, to contract and pre-pay customers also, wap connections are charged by the sec whether connecting over gprs or wap - at least thats what they say martin - the sim updates had no effect, well well, so i'll give your suggestion a go. to be honest, ie seems really flaky. i mean, i know i've been *&^%ing around changing settings and attempting failed connections all round - not normally a good recipe for success with ms products, but some of the things it does...another good one is that whenever i try to reconnect - different session, ok - to an url from the History session, it redials and reloads the page live. where's the bloody cache when you need it, eh? nuff said, glasto's on
Guest lazyb5 Posted June 28, 2003 Report Posted June 28, 2003 sorry guys had to go out drinking I`m on contract and got stung the first month for 35 quid this on a 15 a month contract so i havnt used the internet part at all just used the phone for games and music etc. I saw a thread earlier which said about wap which used to cost 10p a minute this is obviously a lot more preferable than 3 quid a mb. Any help would be appreciated as i feel i`m not geting everything from the hone i could.
Guest mark_l_sanders Posted June 29, 2003 Report Posted June 29, 2003 as i said, wap is free for all customers for 3 months if you take part in their special offer. for contract, you can then get unlimited wap access for £4 a month...
