I've been using my SPV a bit for web-browsing on my laptop (connecting through GPRS and using the SPV/cradle as a USB modem).

But needless to say this is expensive  .

I have quite a lot of 'free' minutes included in my monthly contract which i'm not currently using fully, so i was wondering if i could somehow use those to connect to the net...

I'm not exactly clear on how this might work, but is it possible to use the phone like a 'mobile' landline, and dial through it to my normal 56k service provider? I mean, not using it as the modem but just as the connection?

If this is possible, and i was to use an 0845 isp like 'Freeola', would it still cost the same as a local call (and therefore be included in my free minutes)?

im on every day 50 (orange) and they have told me that for the fifty minutes i have free i can access the internet free of charge and its one pence per minute after my free minutes. they said this applies at any connection speed too. they also said that its only 12 pence per minute peak to access the net but ill wait until i see this months phone bill before i believe that

hope that helps

Thanks - those rates sound supprisingly good :) ...

..but how do i physically set this up? i assume the phone is connected to the laptop by the cradle and activesync, but what do i need to do software-wise to set this up?

EDIT: I'm getting a bit confused here - when i use my SPV as a usb modem, is it using GPRS (and bound by my 1mb limit) or am i using my free minutes like with a voice call? Is there anyway to select between the two?

activate the modem on your spv (dont have your spv in the cradle when you do this) plug it into the cradle when activated and your pc will recognise it as a modem (having the right drivers will help but i didnt need them) then sign up for a payg internet account and when you you set the connection settings select the modem you want to use and that should be it. i use freeserve payg internet its an 0845 that it uses.

hope that helps
