"Airplane Mode ON" .....?

I just read the article, http://www.ppcw.net/index.php?itemid=1365

and they changed the "radio on, radio off" title to "airplane mode on, off"

Shouldn't it be something different? I turn the "radio off" whenever i don't get any signal so that it doesnt drain the battery...not because im on an airplane. Or i do it so i can use my phone and not have anyone call.

I wonder if this will be in our next update...hmmm

this makes sense for the nice ladies on the plane that nicely ask you to turn you phone on and you tring to nicely explain what radio off means.. :)

but yeah, it's very misleading..

I'd put it like: Radio off (Airplane mode on)

id call it 'signal search off' Damn airlines dont believe you when you try to tell em anyway!

Bit pointless putting the function in if they don't even sell the idea to the airlines, I thought they would lord it up and be bragging about it to the airlines, good marketing point to pull in another target consumer area.

Don't forget it is a pre-production model. Features and settings currently available may or may not stay in the final release :)

There's nothing "particularly" new about an "Airplane mode". Lots of devices have had this for 2 or 3 years, when the device has other uses other than a phone.

eg. Siemens SL45 (I don't think it worked on my version) Motorola Accompli 008, Handspring Treo etc. etc.

The airlines are fully aware of "airplane modes" but would rather that noone used their phones with this feature, for fear of other travellers seeing this as a "green light" to start playing snake etc. on their phones! It's understandable, as they'd have to explain to passengers that his phone is ok, but yours isn't :!:

I just used mine very discretely :)

There's a number of ways round that, they just can't be bothered. I mean if there was a bit more awareness about it people would insist on using their phones cause they knew they were safe and eventually the airlines would permit them due to public pressure.

I'm sure I heard recently that airlines were looking into doing something to planes which would allow the use of mobiles :?:

I also "think" I remember someone saying that it's a load of cr*p anyway, that mobiles interfere with the equipment :?

I guess you're right saying they can't be bothered, they could quite easily have a list of "acceptable" handsets? But, then they'd have to go round and check that everyone had turned off the "radio" which is more work for them?

I haven't heard that one, but some airlines are exprimenting with WiFi networks to give net access to laptops.

I'm waiting for the press release where an airline installs a Counter-Strike server!

One of things that they could do was at check-in ask a question about your mobile and get it out to prove that you have that particular model, they could then give you a sticker to wear, which is what some airlines (dunno about all) do to identify you as a connecting passenger, easy for the cabin attendants to spot and that means anyone without a sticker and a mobile phone in their hands in use, needs a good kicking :)

Or you could all just cope without your phone for an hour or two. Shocking I know, but it is possible...

I believe they dislike mobile phone use because it is irritating to other passengers, not really because it would interfere with any equipment -

it's the old 'Trigger Happy TV' :) sketch:

''ring ring ring... HELLO - YES, IM ON A PLANE.... YES.... YES.... YES, I KNOW THEY ARENT ALLOWED..... '' etc.

Which is probably why the crew dont like the 'airplane mode' either - because it's a license for kiddies with their mobiles to start playing games with the volume up, or (god forbid), start going through their ringtones one-by-one because they're bored out of their minds.

...it's esspecially bad if they've got a nokia with those awful polyphonic things. ;)

Instead of Radio Off......call it Cellphone Off.

Instead of Radio On......call it Cellphone On.

This way, even the Americans will understand it :) ;) :D

That's the whole point though, on a 12 hour night flight when the entire plane is asleep (bar the pilots of course), there is no film to watch and there is not much to look out of the window at, so being able to watch a movie on the SPV or listen to some music of your choice would solve this problem, especially if you don't like confined spaces and can't sleep because of it.
