Guest Extreme_biker0 Posted July 3, 2003 Report Posted July 3, 2003 As a student i find my SPV invaluable for reminding me of my lessons and stuff. But guess what? After a night out with no recollection of bumping the stupid thing I discovered that the screen was smashed. That was this morning. I am well gutted. £300 on PAYG back in January, and now I have the most expencive, multimedia capable, cracked screen phone in the world. DAMN!!! Thats all i need. Thing is though, the plastic case that is supposed to protect the screen is not cracked. What a stupid design. It is so thin that it flexes enough to allow you to smash the screen but not crack the plastic. How stupid is that? The plastic should be thicker! Its no use having an unbrocken cover if your screen is broken! P.S. Is there any1 out there with a broken SPV with the screen in tact for cheap? Cheers!
Guest gregbarton Posted July 3, 2003 Report Posted July 3, 2003 EXACTLY same thing happened to me and im so pissed off but now im gonna get a Tanager and i hope it will be better!!!
Guest nobznss Posted July 3, 2003 Report Posted July 3, 2003 I read somewhere of someone trying to buy a used SPV that was broken for some other reason than a broken screen. I don't know if it ever worked when he hooked it up or not, but hey, it's worth a try.
Guest Extreme_biker0 Posted July 3, 2003 Report Posted July 3, 2003 I wish i could afford a Tanager! Maybe if i save up... Is it true that Tanager uses TFT not LCD? TFT are flexible arent they? Thats loads better than the SPV grrrrr i hate it when they bring better stuff out just after you buy yours.
Guest midnight Posted July 4, 2003 Report Posted July 4, 2003 errr, the spv has a tft display :) difference is, the spv screen is reflective and the tanager is transflective
Guest Hax Posted July 4, 2003 Report Posted July 4, 2003 And TFT does not mean the screen is flexible - stands for Thin Film Transistor.... As for is being a stupid design, yes the plastic case does flex a little, but you'd have to try damned hard to get it to crack your screen - I didn't want to try too hard mind you ;o) To be fair, you can't expect the SPV (or any other non-military product) to be able to withstand a serious bashing like you must have inflicted on your SPV. It's hard to find the right type of material for the job, especially when looking for a clear plastic that doesn't interfere with the clarity of the display that it's protecting. If ends up being a trade off at some point, between clarity, durability, suitability and price. On top of that, many plastics do not work well together because of their different properties, and some plastics (certain types of acrylics IIRC) are prone to problems such as cracking when they come into contact with for example an alcohol based cleaner..... There's so much to look at. IMHO, it's not bad design if you are careless with your phone. The problem these days is that the displays are so much bigger that it becomes increasingly easy to break them - you try taking a piece of glass about half inch square and see how much force is required to break it in comparison to a piece of the same thickness, but this time with a surface area of about 3 square inches.... Anyway, that's enough - time to go home for the weekend :)) Hax
Guest Extreme_biker0 Posted July 4, 2003 Report Posted July 4, 2003 How come I have a TFT flat screen in front of me, and I can stroke the display and it is flexible? Its not made of glass. And why cant that be put into a phone?
Guest Hax Posted July 4, 2003 Report Posted July 4, 2003 In that case then, I challenge you to remove your flexible TFT and bend it through 30 degrees. If it truly is flexible, that should be no problem. Hax
Guest Hax Posted July 4, 2003 Report Posted July 4, 2003 Oooops - double post - sorry - but no delete option... Can a mod. remove this one please  Ta, Hax
Guest Posted July 4, 2003 Report Posted July 4, 2003 How come I have a TFT flat screen in front of me, and I can stroke the display and it is flexible? Its not made of glass. And why cant that be put into a phone? But it's not that strong, that's why HTC put another piece of plastic in front of the SPV's srceen to protect it. Without that plastic far more of us would be complaining about broken screens. Computer TFTs are quite easy to damage, light preasure is enough to distort / discolour the display, a bit more preasure and you'll start to do damage; added to this they are quite easy to puncture. Imagine the same screen in your pocket rubbing against your spare change!
