Guest cyrilthefish Posted July 5, 2003 Report Posted July 5, 2003 This is the result of me accidentally dropping a SPV onto concrete paving while walking quite fast on the way home. interestingly, whilst the IR cover died horribly, the SPV itself kept going and didn't even drop the call! just picked the phone up and carried on talking! would i be able to get orange care and claim a few days later? i have carphone warehouse insurance but they are refusing to replace it even if i pay the insurance excess, they will only send it off for repair which they say takes 4 weeks! i don't know why they are doing this, as they replaced my phone on the spot when i did a simalar thing to my old phone a year or 2 ago. i'll be cancelling the insurance tomorrow as it doesn't seem much use anymore :)
Guest Matt Kirby Posted July 5, 2003 Report Posted July 5, 2003 Sounds like an emergency care thing to me - I think it's £30 upfront, and you have to agree to take out Orange Care for a year (which I think is £5 per month). In my opinion the Carephone Warehouse, while being a great place to buy a phone, is a bit sh*t for insurance; as you've found out they are not too keen on paying out for accidental damage (plus insisting on sending it for repair rather than replacing). Orange will just say "now you have been a silly boy (or girl, depending!), a courier will be with you within the next few days". Only way to go methinks!
Guest foxy11 Posted July 6, 2003 Report Posted July 6, 2003 luckily mine bouced pretty well at the pub yesterday, bad luck :)
Guest Glorfindal Posted July 6, 2003 Report Posted July 6, 2003 i managed to drop mine down the toilet, after a number 1 (lucky) and when i picked it out and let it dry on a radiator for a day it still works fine..........
Guest HelloDave Posted July 7, 2003 Report Posted July 7, 2003 I dropped my SPV from 2 feet onto a hard floor and it was fine, but the SD card turned to garbage! That was a fun afternoon with a card reader and WinHex...teach me to make backups! Keys have also gouged my SPV's screen. :) My mate dropped his Samsung T100 into a pint of WKD - it was fine until the next day when it died. Oops...

Your right I had an unfortunate incident back at Christmas. My dog got hold of my previous phone (Siemens SL) and decide to treat it as he would a bone! It's funny orange said the same to my dog  But anyway I had to pay £30 up front then agree to £5 a month insurance for the rest of my contract. My contract was up for renewal in May, so instead of paying the £5 for the rest of the contracts life, I ended my old one and got a new contract and my new spv. Moral of the story is... keep your phone away from animals!
Guest FragMeister Posted July 7, 2003 Report Posted July 7, 2003 I went to put mine in my shirt pocket, except that when I let go of it, rather than nestling gently next to my nipple, it fell to the floor, a concete one at that! the top of the casing near the IR sensor came away so i had to clip it back in place. apart from that, it still works fine. Much better than when I did the same thing with my old Nokia, and it cracked the screen so I couldnt see what was happening, what made that incident worse was that it was 1 week after cancelling Orange Care- DOH!
Guest fraser Posted July 8, 2003 Report Posted July 8, 2003 I've only dropped mine once, from waist height onto the pavement. The amount of damage is unbelievable, nothing popped off, but the plastic casing took a hammering; it's covered in gourges and scratches. I don't think much of it's cosmetic durability.
Guest squall Posted July 9, 2003 Report Posted July 9, 2003 regarding orange care, if you take it out with say 3 months left before the end of the first year of the contract, can you then cancel the contract and insurance 3 months later at the end of the year?
Guest Coucou Posted July 9, 2003 Report Posted July 9, 2003 You don't necessarily need to take out Orange Care for a year, you can pay more (I forget how much, £60 maybe?) as a one off. I know because my old N*kia 6210 got run over by a bus and I wasn't insured at the time. It still didn't completely die and the battery was fine, wonder how the SPV would fare?
