Guest elvie Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 Hi all, Just got my SPV [orange] phone and I'm getting frustrated!! Hopefully somebody out there will be able to help me out. So here goes... 1. Battery life: My phone has run out of battery after roughly 24 hours, is this right? I initially charged the battery for 8 hours [the manual suggests 3 hours for the first charge, although the shop assistant did turn the phone on when I fist got it, before the first charge] 2. Screen saver: At first, after about a minute, the screen would go blank. By pressing a button, it would come alive, but some times, it stays dead even though the orange light flashes, and the only way to get the phone going again is by removing the battery, and then starting the phone up. is this right? 3. Is the screen saver [i.e. screen turns blank] necessary, am I running the risk on burning the screen if disabled? 4. Is there a way of copying the contacts stored on the SIM to the phone, without having to create a new contact and inserting the number? By doing it this way, you have to retype the name etc, very laborious.... 5. That’s about all folks. Thanks for taking the time to read this. If you can offer any tips/hints/answers, they will be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance...
Guest Syvwlch Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 Welcome to the ranks, soldier! Here goes : 1. Battery life is nothing hot on this phone, and 24h is about right, for heavy use. On these batteries, the battery life may INCREASE with the first few charges, I wouldn't worry too much at the mo. 2. This is NOT right... unless you have the phone on keyboard lock, in which case, once the screen is off, only unlocking the keyboard OR an incoming call will turn it back on. Next time this happens, try to hit the uppermost left-hand key just under the screen, this should get you back into the un-lock keypad screen. If this fails, tell us here and we'll see what more we can do for you. 3. The screen turns off much more to conserve battery life than to protect the screen. It is not recommended to leave the screen on all the time as this will really empty the batteries quickly. I haven't heard that the screen itself is in any danger. 4. There is an application on the phone called SIM Manager. It can be used to copy SIM-stored numbers to the phone contacts list. Good luck with the phone, and come back here if any of this poses any problems, ok? :)
Guest elvie Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 Thanks for the post!! 1. I'm guessing that I'm playing round with the phone loads at the mo, seeing as it is new, so hopefully, when the boredom wares off, the battery will last a little longer... 2. The phone has just [as I type this] switched the screen off again [but not off, as the flashing light is still on, so the phone is still on?]. I've tried pressing all the buttons, on/off switch, your suggestion of the uppermost left button, but nothing happens. The keypad wasn't locked, and I've just tried to call the phone, but it still won't come on [doesn't even switch to answer phone, but I'm roaming in Italy, so that might have something to do with it?]. Any ideas? Thanks in advance...
Guest Syvwlch Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 :) That doesn't sound good. Do you wanna try setting the Programs>Settings>Power Management>Screen Saver Mode to "None"? I'd like to make sure that it IS the screen saver that is turning off the screen.
Guest elvie Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 I've previously set Programs>Settings>Power Management>Screen Saver Mode to "None"... And it does fix the problem, but then again, it is using up more battery power this way, isn't it?
Guest amaidment Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 Just a suggestion, but one way of seeing if it is just the screen dying would be to call another phone or yours from your SPV and hang up without answering. This should mean its in your last made calls. This would mean that by pressing the green telephone (call) button twice should ring the number again. Next time the screen dies try pressing this button twice and see if the other phone rings again. Just a thought, but if it rings then you know the phone is working and the screen isn't
Guest Syvwlch Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 So you have a screen saver that never allows the screen to turn back on... including when the keyboard is NOT locked. Have you tried a hard reset or an update?
Guest elvie Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 Thats, correct... The screen saver [blank screen], never allows the screen to turn back on... I haven't tried a 'hard reset', or a update, wouldn't know how to do either.
Guest midnight Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 because your phone is new, and presumably you havent installed an software, perhaps only added contacts, then i recommend backig up your contacts with activesync, so all yer contacts are in outlook, then do a hard reset..... http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic...ight=hard+reset hopefully that will fix the problem. at first i thought this was because the keypad was autolocking, but, if the screen doesnt come back on after pressing either softkey 1 or the power button then that cant be the case. if the hard reset doesnt work then an update may fix it (presuming it isnt updated already, which is possible if its a new phone) and if that doesnt work, its a replacement from orange i'm afraid.
Guest Syvwlch Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 Say, a thread over in Wishlist just made me think of something... Have you got Device Lock enabled, with a code set? Perhaps that is what is kicking in, and due to the fiddling in the last update with letting the screen turn on inside your pocket, you're getting the page asking for the device lock code, but can't see it? Presumably, Device Lock should survive battery removal, but still... it's a thought. Had any luck lately?

Phone's still locking on me. Have turned off the screen saver, but the phone is still locking even with the screen alive, and can only be used by removing the battery, and restarting!! I've updated the ROM to 1.3.5.6, but it hasn't fixed the problem. Do you still think I should try a hard reset? Would rather [try and] fix the problem myself, then giving the phone back to orange, last time my phone was getting fixed, it took 6 weeks!! P.S. haven't got outlook on this particular computer, what files do I need to copy in order to backup my contacts prior to the hard reset. Thanks again for the posts...
Guest Syvwlch Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 Oh, so it's not the screen saver at all? The phone just freezes? That's a definite Hard Reset, and if that fails, return to sender. The files containing the PIM databases (contacts and such) are, (lifted this from a post by Hax) : mxip_lang.vol mxip_initdb.vol cemail.vol This was posted in the context of DELETING the entries, not backing them up, I don't know what happens if you copy these to the PC, hard reset, then paste these back. You can be the first to try if you are feeling adventurous? http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic...delete+contacts Good luck with the Hard Reset...
Guest Hax Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 The files containing the PIM databases (contacts and such) are, (lifted this from a post by Hax) : mxip_lang.vol mxip_initdb.vol cemail.vol This was posted in the context of DELETING the entries, not backing them up, I don't know what happens if you copy these to the PC, hard reset, then paste these back. You can be the first to try if you are feeling adventurous? I wouldn't bother with copying the files off and then back on - that was the "cause" of my troubles - I wanted to preserve my text messages, contacts and calendar, etc.. which *did* work, but also left me with a "phantom" alarm ;) What this means is that you end up with a "phantom" alarm going off every day at the last time you the "main" alarm before the backup of said files, with there being nothing you can do about it either. After the restore of the files, it's not visible anywhere and it isn't related to the "main" alarm settings! Most annoying. You could try disabling the alarm first and then backing up the files, this might work - can't remember if my alarm was on or off when I had the problem. Anyways, hope you manage to solve the problem - and if you do, please share your solution with us - even if it does mean having to get a replacement - useful for future reference :) Hax
Guest elvie Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 Ok, So I just tried to do a 'Hard Reset'. I followed the steps as detailed in http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic...ight=hard+reset - Remove the battery and wait 5 seconds. Replace the battery - Press and Hold voice recorder button (below the power button on the left-hand side) - Power-on the device - The device will enter a special power-up mode - "Card found" will be displayed on the screen - Shortly after you will receive two options: "Press any key to enter boot loader" and "Press action button to enter diag mod" But I only get the first option 'Press any ket to enter boot loader' and not the second option "Press action button to enter diag mod", which is the option I need to continue... The screen then goes to show the three colour bands, with 'serial' written in the bottom left corner. What now?
Guest Richie M Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 Dont' worry m8, as soon as it says "Press any key" press and hold Action, then you should get where you want :) you have to be quick tho and it's all down to timing, if you have a backup on your card i'd remove first as you may just restore the back-up instead of going into diag ;)
Guest elvie Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 Thanks for the tip, Have managed to do the 'hard reset', now just waiting to see if my 'freezing' problem still occur. Thinking about de-certifying my phone once this is sorted out. Does this effect any warranties, guaranties etc, with either Orange or the Link [i've got the link 'master care' phone cover]. Thanks
Guest Richie M Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 De-certing doesn't affect any warranty etc (all you have to do to re-apply the cert is to do a hard-reset!)
