Guest spiderboy Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 Has anyone ever been able to move the application order around in the start menu. It just makes sense that you want to have the application that you use most, first on the menu. :?:
Guest Syvwlch Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 Yes, there is a registry tweak that does this, I think I read yesterday night. why don't you try a search with registry and start menu? or variations thereof? Or find a post by midnight, lick on the link to his brand new webpage in his sig, and i think I saw it there, too?
Guest Syvwlch Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 er... clicking on the link oughta do it, no need to get carried away.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 I've done a search for you :) here
Guest spiderboy Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 was just getting exited about licking links. 8) cheers dudes!!!
Guest spiderboy Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 Ok Sorry one more daft question how do you edit the registry???
Guest Syvwlch Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 First, get the RegEdit program... from Midnight's site, for example : http://www.way2access.net/midnight/?page=miscsoftware And then do some reading up on it... and be ready to crash the phone. It's not too bad but it does happen. If you're still sure you want to do this... Fire up RegEdit, navigate to the proper key by clicking on the tree structure. When you are at the right point, you will have to select softkey 1 "Values", to display the items that need editing. Clicking on them will open them for editing. Clicking on done will set the new values. In the menu are the rename, cut, copy, paste and under functions you might want to use to make your live easier. If you knacker the phone completely, a hard reset ought to fix everything. For more particulars, again, do some reading, and start with some of the simpler registry tweaks on Midnight's site. Good luck, it's fun!
Guest flashfodder Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 Sorry peeps.. just adding a different variation on the theme.... I found it very annoying having to keep pressing 9 to get what I want. Especially once I unlocked the phone and added more programs. I went into IPSM/WINDOWS/START MENU. I then created my own folders & directory tree to access the applications. Now, I can reach pretty much any application within 2 button presses. Much easier in my book. The thing is, you may be able to change it so the most used apps are at the front but you'll still have to cycle through it all if you decide you need a less used app. Creating folders & grouping types of apps in these folders should be the way to go methinks?
Guest Syvwlch Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 :oops! Flashfodder, you are right, of course. That is the easiest AND most effective method to create a useable Start Menu, rather than the three page monster you get out of the box. Whipping out the techiest solution is a bad reflex, particularly when helping someone who's not necessarily interested in RegEdit, just a good Start Menu. I shoulda thought of that when Spidey here asked how to use RegEdit. Thanks for the comment! :)
Guest flashfodder Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 That's cool Syvwich, Anything to help out. :)
Guest spiderboy Posted March 25, 2003 Report Posted March 25, 2003 Ok Syvwlch I installed the PHM Regedit on my phone but when I run the app I get an error message stating that this is not a valid "Windows CE application" Any ideas why this app does not want to run. P.S. It installed fine as my phone is de-certed, just wont run.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted March 25, 2003 Report Posted March 25, 2003 Are you sure midnight hasnt uploaded the PPC version by mistake? Might want to try PHM's website... www.phm.lu (i think)
Guest fozzie Posted March 25, 2003 Report Posted March 25, 2003 ...... or read the note on this page that describes what to do if you are having this problem :)

I did that, too! Need more than 2 button presses though, cause I have 71 shortcuts!
Guest spiderboy Posted March 25, 2003 Report Posted March 25, 2003 Ok Installed the CAB file direct on the phone and it works a treat. Just one more question does the registry on the phone work the same as on a PC as in when you make a registry change you ahve to restart the phone for it to take effect?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted March 25, 2003 Report Posted March 25, 2003 Yes (in general) :) Don't annoy it though, if Windows believes its been corrupted [Read: changed] it will rebuild the registry, decertified. As long as you don't make any silly typo's you'll be alright though ;)
Guest midnight Posted March 25, 2003 Report Posted March 25, 2003 it depends on what you are changing to be honest, most registry changes and i'd say no, you do not, however, the start menu is one of those that yes, you do need to restart the phone, it's mentioned on my website if you wanna check that out, and other registry tweaks (once again another shameless plug  )
Guest Pagemakers Posted March 25, 2003 Report Posted March 25, 2003 It in alphabetical order - just rename your shortcuts in the start menu.
Guest midnight Posted March 25, 2003 Report Posted March 25, 2003 hehe, thats the 'orange' way of doing it, and microsoft said it just cant be done, guess we proved 'em wrong eh  i dont think renameing the shortcuts is a solution, just makes for daft viewing i think
Guest Pagemakers Posted March 25, 2003 Report Posted March 25, 2003 Mine are re-named and appear in the order I want. You may need to turn your phone off and on again to reflect the changes though.
Guest midnight Posted March 25, 2003 Report Posted March 25, 2003 mine arent renamed and appear in the order i want
Guest Pagemakers Posted March 25, 2003 Report Posted March 25, 2003 Mine took 10 seconds to do! So there :)
Guest midnight Posted March 25, 2003 Report Posted March 25, 2003 so did mine (well, more than 10 seconds obviously and so did your change if you changed ALL of the shortcuts), so there  and i dont have silly named shortcuts (gotta love regedit running through remote desktop display) hehe
Guest midnight Posted March 25, 2003 Report Posted March 25, 2003 oh, and i dont have the orange backup or orange update on the first page  your move
Guest Richie M Posted March 25, 2003 Report Posted March 25, 2003 oh, and i dont have the orange backup or orange update on the first page  your move  Soz, i don't understand that one m8 :? nor have i, i've got em in a folder on the last page (not renamed the shortcut or anything) :?
