Guest Pinnacle Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 My SPV is in route to me right now. Got a question for anyone in the US using the SPV with TMobile's GPRS network. Do the GPRS settings for this phone fall under TMobile's data plans for PDA's and Data PC Cards; or do they fall under GPRS phone data plans? I ask this because there's a huge MB and $ difference between the two. I've actually got both plans currently. I pay $5/month for 1 MB of data for my t68. I pay $35/month for 20 MB of data for my PPC Phone Edition. I want to use my 20 MB plan for the SPV just because I can see myself using a lot of data with this thing. Can it be done?
Guest Syvwlch Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 Yes, it should be perfectly feasible. The settings are probably different, and you should be able to create both, one as a GPRS connection to "The Internet" and the other as a GPRS connection to "WAP Network". In particular, you may want a French app called WebWapSelect, which allows you to control the device profile the SPV broadcasts when it goes on the internet (WAP phone, full PC Browser, iMode phone, and SPV), in case you need to fool the T-Mobile GPRS network into thinking you are a PC/PDA rather than a phone. The link here still works for me : http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic...ht=webwapselect
Guest Pinnacle Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 Hey, thanks, I'll give that a go. I'm sure I'll have a lot to explore on my own when this phone shows up since TMobile US doesn't support it. If there are any TMobile US users out there, I'd love to hear your billing experiences so far and what settings seem to work best for data...if I may
Guest aiwapro Posted March 24, 2003 Report Posted March 24, 2003 Hey Brandon. It's me, Christopher, I use the T-Zones Pro. It is $9.99 for 10MB, and I use the Traffic counter application to keep track of how much data I use throughout the month. I have 2.51 MB left, and I use the connection pretty heavily. Today is the last day of my billing cycle too.
Guest priccijr Posted March 24, 2003 Report Posted March 24, 2003 I just switched my GPRS from the $2.99 plan to the $9.99 plan because of the amount of time I was spending on the net with this phone. It seems there is more web sites formatted for the smartphone than there are for the pocketpc. If you need help setting it up when you get it PM me and I'll give you as much help as I can. P.S. I called TM yesterday and the tech I spoke with never even heard of the SPV he gave me the settings I needed and told me "I hope you know where to put them."
Guest smartytron Posted March 25, 2003 Report Posted March 25, 2003 hey pinnacle, i vebeen using the spv on tmobile here in austin texas since right before the launch. at that point i had to pretend i was using a pocketpcphone to get any tech support, as the device wasnt on their list. so rememberthat if u call them. i m on the 9.99/10 megs plan and it works pretty darn well -- never gone over the limit and i use it a fair ammount.. i guess... how do u judge that. IMPRTANT, find the list of tips to speed up the device and DO THEM. it will make for a MUCH BETTER phone. its things like speeding up cursor rate, turning off key press sounds, etc. i think just those two will make for a better experience. feel free to PM me or email me if you got any questions. adios mario
Guest Pinnacle Posted March 25, 2003 Report Posted March 25, 2003 Thanks, guys. If I need help, I know where to look. The problem is that my phone hasn't shown up yet, and it's driving me crazy  I'll probably look at that $9.99/10 MB plan and hope I get the settings correct. I'm just going at it blind right now, though, with no phone to look at. I'm ready...just need the hardware...right Christopher?!
Guest yoos Posted March 26, 2003 Report Posted March 26, 2003 Hi All, Are there any features on the phone that don't work with T-Mobile if I use T-Zones in the USA? I am very anxiously waiting for my SPV (should be here next Mon/Tue) and I use T-Mobile. Not sure if I'll have any difficulties setting the phone up to work (I hope not!), but I was wondering if some things aren't possible in the USA... Thanks!! By the way.... This Forum is AWESOME!
Guest Syvwlch Posted March 26, 2003 Report Posted March 26, 2003 Looks like the American Chapter of MoDaCo is growing by leaps and bounds! :)
Guest priccijr Posted March 26, 2003 Report Posted March 26, 2003 I haven't found any functions that don't work on TM everything works great.
Guest aiwapro Posted March 26, 2003 Report Posted March 26, 2003 Yep, everything works with T-Mobile.
Guest Coolboy1982 Posted March 26, 2003 Report Posted March 26, 2003 Yep, everything works with T-Mobile. yep! German precision! ;-) EDIT - supposed everyone knows T-Mobile is a German company (belongs to Deutsche Telekom)
Guest Dustin Smith Posted March 27, 2003 Report Posted March 27, 2003 Has anyone had any luck with SPV and ATTWS? I am already on ATTWS and don't want to switch to t-mobile, although might be forced to if ATTWS does not get their act together.
Guest yoos Posted March 27, 2003 Report Posted March 27, 2003 Thanks for all the feedback everyone! Dustin, Besides the possibility of ATTWS not working with the SPV (I don't know if it will or won't), are the other reasons you don't like ATTWS?
Guest raerae28 Posted March 27, 2003 Report Posted March 27, 2003 I am wondering about the ATT-Wireless usage as well. Has anyone done or used this with an SPV? I just ordered a T68i with a contract on ATT-Wireless to use with my SPV. I have 30 days to try it and send it back if I decide to go with T-Mobile. The charges ranked out to be higher with ATT though...roughly 19.99 for 8MB of data. vs 9.99 for 10MB on T-Mobile. It seems ATT really hasnt come around with the data plan pricing yet, but they seem to have a high degree of technical stuff and forums on their websites, with people talking about using P800, etc etc. R.W.
Guest Antilles_Prime Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 is the internet with TMobile 'always on' similar to how a cable modem is 'always on'? or do you have to dialup to the internet to use it? Also, would this phone work with Cingular? I'm considering importing one to North America and using it here. I am just leery of T Mobile as they have no such thing as 'roaming' and I need this thing on business trips. The reason I like the idea of the SPV so much is that it seems to have a great web browser, and I have some lite weight internet apps that i want to do data entry with from the field via the phone...
Guest raerae28 Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 It is always on from a standpoint. GPRS is packet switched so you are only charged for the packets of data sent. Not the amount of times you call in to use it. Also you can start something like MSN Messenger and let it stay on if you like and will remain connected fairly decently. I would suggest the AT-T service although its expensive they have the Office Online thing, which will let you get your email and stuff while away from the office. T-Mobile has better coverage and lower data rates, but nothing like Office Online and thats why I went with AT-T. Got everything working except for WAP. Got GPRS data working, MMS working, SMS(always worked), phone calls(always work). Also just got a Nokia 3650 too. Pretty nice phone, way better interface to deal with physically than the SPV, but its less business ready than the SPV. I am thinking about selling my SPV, I have only had it for 2 weeks now. R.W.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 How does teh 3650 keypad hold up out of interest?
Guest raerae28 Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 Its odd at first, but its not that big of a deal after a day or two. The issues I have found are the following: Connectivity to the desktop(contacts & calendar) Bad as always...getting IR to work with the Nokia PC Suite software is always a bear, but got it installed and working on a clean machine no less. Applications install.... It would appear that the big heavies are trying to really provide you with the applications instead of you being able to easily install them on your own....ALA Orange and the cert lock. it is really coming down to nickle and dime, basically you buy the app or several came installed on the unit for a 15 use trial period, and then you can buy them for 5.99 via the service online on your phone. If you lose them you can re-install for up to 60 days afterwards. Full Browsing on the unit: Non existent, Opera has a browser in beta for the series 60, but I havent found a place to download it. WAP browsing works really well though, and is almost viable on a big screen like the 3650's. Browsing real sites...I have never got it to work. Bluetooth: Works with ONLY certain headsets and doesnt work with my Jabra BT200, but pairs with it just fine. Bluetooth hogs battery life down to one day. Overall good things.... Good keypad spacing and feeling, although they could have put a bump on the keypad making pressing in more easy. Phone charges awfully quickly, like 1.5 hours Speaker phone is flawless in quiet situations, people cant tell you are on speaker phone or on a cell in good reception areas. (I have yet to find out how to turn the speaker phone on the SPV) Menu is configurable from a list to a icon based in a flash...THIS is a huge when over operability versus the SPV....it just works out the the SPV seems to have more complexity than the 3650 so the menus are how they are on the SPV versus the 3650, but in actuality they are about the same level of complexity the 3650 just hides this from the user with its gui.
Guest mrjuglas Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 To use the speakerphone press and hold the 'make call' button above 'home - but this only works while you are in a call. Also, apparently if you end a call whilst in the speakerphone mode you run the risk of blasting your ears off when you next answer (although this has never happened to me so I'm not sure)
