Before attempting de-certification, many posts talk about back-ups. Is this the Orange Backup functiopn? Is it saved to a SD card?

I have also read about back up by active sync, but I can't seem to find out how this is done. I think this be an error.

My Orange guide relates to backing up the sim card and search here had 1444 results. I know this is a simple topic, so I hope it will be no bother for someone to keep me right.

l believe the Orange backup backs up to network only.

When DE certifying all data on the phone is lost. Mostly, you need to back up your contacts and agenda with Outlook & since most of your other data should be on the card, you only need to keep a copy of your start menu on the PC for fast recovery.

Almark - this is only really an issue if you want to save your SMS's, as the only way to do that is a backup to a SD Card via the Bootloader or USBTerm(via Activ-Sync) there are numerous posts (especially on USBTerm ) in here or check out the Bacup guide in Articles section.

Everything else can be backed-up in otherways (Contacts & Document Folders (?) via Orange Backup, Contacts Activ-Sync'd with Outlook or just copying Home Screens & RingTones to a PC ;)

Good luck and have fun :)

Ah So I am not a total plonker!

I have synced to my laptop and main PC, and as one is XP and the other is win2000 they both work fine. The reason I ask all this, is the last ime I tried this (de-cert) approach i lost all GPRS settings and SMS, MMS as well.

SO, please make it clear for a confused person. I have a full back up of info on my PC and laptop of my outlook deatails. Is that all i need?

When I de cert, all I need to do is copy my detilas from eiother my pc or laptop?

Er... no, you are right, if your connection details are NOT the standard ones from Orange, you will lose those too

I do not know how to save those settings so that you can restore them after a hard reset/decert
