Guest madu Posted December 11, 2002 Report Posted December 11, 2002 Right then, I browsed to IPSMWindowsStartup (what IPMS stand for by the way?) In there there are some links. Some of them are: EzPushRouterRegister Orange Support SmsClassZero eloff coldinit I wonder what these tthings actually do, maybe remove some stuff to speed up/reduce mem usage??
Guest rcraswell Posted December 11, 2002 Report Posted December 11, 2002 IPSM is either "Internal Persistent Storage Memory" or "Institute for Preventative Sports Medicine" I forget which... --ron
Guest cdwilkinson Posted December 17, 2002 Report Posted December 17, 2002 I've temporary removed all the shortcuts in the folder IPSMStartup and did a phone power on/off cycle. (Files Copied To PC For Safety) I've not noticable difference to the operation of the phone apart from it running far faster than it did before. Especially Menu's Responce Times. Im looking into what exactly these file do, theres some insteresting filename. Anyone else any Ideas?
Guest madu Posted December 17, 2002 Report Posted December 17, 2002 Nice one!!! Keep up the good work! Let us know what they are when u find out. There are two called: -Addcontact -Usbconnect Surely if they were what they mean, you would not be able to connect through usb or add a contact... Strange...
Guest daveng Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 Maybe one of these check the simlock under a fake name (hey, I can dream can't I?). Since you can change your SIM card on the fly without the phone doing the check, I suppose that it only does the check after booting (though if you turn the radio off then on, it does it too). Did you try another SIM than Orange without these files in the Startup Folder?
Guest kevlar Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 is your phone much faster? Kevlar
Guest cdwilkinson Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 Mine is definately faster, ran it all day 2 day without any problems, it's been off charge for 12 hrs, and found my battery to only have gone down by less that 1cm on the Battery level screen. :D Maybe these progs are time consuming and battery consuming. Will keep ya posted on this. Tried swopping Sims over but no joy, Still sim locked. Maybe its a Run Key in the registry :?:
Guest daveng Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 cdwilkinson, can you confirm that you removed these files from the StartUp folder and that your phone works the same (or at least, seems to) : coldinit Usbcnect eloff smsClassZero EzPushRouterRegister AddContact I want to try but then I have to reboot my phone. I don't have a Orange SIM so I have to swap cards after boot and it does not always work (last time I had to play around for almost an hour before getting the service). I bought my phone with no subsidies and Orange promised me to get me an unlock code (which they are still looking for),... but that's another story. So I can't really experiment on rebooting the phone because it's a real pain to do so. But I'd still like to have a quicker phone with a better battery time ! Thanks for you comment on these files.
Guest madu Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 Any way Orange/MS could help us out on this one?? Well, if there gonna be no bullshit... Surely if they are there and don't do anything OBV. they must do something kinda 'service/hidden/secret'... So we want no lies!!
Guest spacemonkey Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 coldinit Usbcnect eloff smsClassZero EzPushRouterRegister AddContact At a glance the things to test would be: Usbcnect... without this does it sync properly? does the camera still work? smsClassZero... does it recieve sms's and tell you about them? EzPushRouterRegister... Is GPRS still OK? AddContact... can I add a contact? how about if I see a contact in the body of an SMS, does it let me add that? eloff... No idea what so ever... I also have 'Orange Support' on mine which runs a prog called AELock.exe This stuff is worth looking into but I'm sure we must be removing something that does... "something"
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 smsClassZero is probably for displaying class 0 SMS', which are messages that are displayed on the screen without you having to select 'read'. P
Guest cdwilkinson Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 Hi daveng , Yes i moved all the files from this folder onto my PC as a backup, only file in there now is 'Traffic Counter SPE' Ive just been on the phone for an hour, and still the Battery level is still over the 1/2 marker. Im looking into what these files do i will be copying some of them off the phone to the pc, and looking at them with a editor , hopefully this will show what these files do. Hi spacemonkey  Usbcnect... without this does it sync properly? does the camera still work? Yes connect to the PC and syncs, not tried camera  smsClassZero... does it recieve sms's and tell you about them? Yes they are still coming through and still get notification  EzPushRouterRegister... Is GPRS still OK? Yes connected with MSN at the moment (Without Cradle attached) AddContact... can I add a contact? how about if I see a contact in the body of an SMS, does it let me add that? Yes just tested that , sent a 02-alert to the phone with a no dummy no on it and it let me add to contacts. Ive absolutly no idea why these icons are they and what they are doing
Guest spacemonkey Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 They are just normal shortcuts, in the explore your phone from the pc thing right click on them and in properties you can see what they run. All except "Orange Support" run an exe of the same name as the shortcut. Orange Support runs AELock.exe Just nuking them off my phone and then I'll see how I go tomorrow.
Guest cdwilkinson Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 See if Your Battery Life Improves Without these files running.
Guest spacemonkey Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 See if Your Battery Life Improves Without these files running. I wouldn't be at all surprised. Most modern processors have an idle mode that uses all most no power. The less background apps you have ticking over the less power it should use... Won't help the power usage from me not keeping my grubby hands off the phone. :D I just knocked off all the startup stuff and rebooted and did a few tests and everything seems happy, so... away we go. Of course being M$ it might well load some of these things when it needs them as you run stuff and increase the amount of slow down when it hasn't been rebooted recently... What we really need is something like task manager so we can have a look at running processes on the phone. And an editable OS so we can delete outright bits of windows we don't like.... (a good backup and critical failure recovery mechanism might be needed soon :( )
Guest spacemonkey Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 This ROCKS Since removing that stuff I've been playing with my SPV. One of the things that really riled my up was the delay when taking a picture. I don't mind if it takes a few secs to process it but the shot it should take is what it was pointed at when it makes the click noise. What it had been doing was taking a shot of what it was pointing at 3 secs after the click noise. Now that I've removed the startup stuff (and rebooted) it is taking a photo of what it was pointed at just slightly after the click. So not perfect but in my judgement a HUGE improvement. This is photoing through the normal MMS app.
Guest rcraswell Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 Orange Support runs AELock.exe. AELock.exe is the little program that listens to incoming WDP messages and processes OTA (Over The Air) updates. --ron
Guest kevlar Posted December 19, 2002 Report Posted December 19, 2002 Any further developements on this? has anything stopped working? is your phone definately faster? Kevlar

Yes just tested that , sent a 02-alert to the phone with a no dummy no on it and it let me add to contacts. Ive absolutly no idea why these icons are they and what they are doing I was performing a search, because I was curious what this app/shortcut "SmsClassZero" from my /Windows/Startup folder does. Then I found this stone age topic, where someone claims that the phone runs more fast without this app starting up. Well maybe it worked for this old version of WM. Unfortunately, it didn't make my 8310 faster. I got the same amount of free memory after reboot. Also I didn't notice any difference in menu handling speed.
Guest odt Posted August 11, 2006 Report Posted August 11, 2006 Hi Guys, perhaps i'm getting this wrong but on my c600 all i have in \windows\startup is 'GPRS Monitor' which is an app i installed. I cant see any of these other files you're talking about. can somebody help?
Guest Qtek8310 Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 That's weird. Well, don't worry. because it seems to work without this file in the startup anyway. I don't notice any difference in speed, but in theory it should matter, so I deleted it. (It's backed up first) Are there any Qtek 8310 or Imate SP5 users, without this file in the startup folder?

There are no files in the start up folder of my SP5 phone. I kept on looking for these files after reading this post but cannot find it anywhere. Phone is working fine, just bought it 3 days ago, so I am looking for different ways to tweak and optimize before I start putting valuable info in it.
