Can I unlock a contract cancelled phone?

Hi. I may be getting an SPV from a friend who had one. However, he cancelled his Orange contract as it was too expensive and the phone can no longer make or receive calls. Everything else works however. I was just wondering (with this being the case) could I still use the SIM Unlocking method on this phone or is it now rendered completely useless? Or would it work with any SIM card now that it has had it's contract cancelled and is no longer tied to Orange?

It'll still be locked to the Orange network, however depending on the bootloader version you should still be able to remove the simlock.
