I've read all there is on the possibility of updating a 2002 phone purchased now to a 2003 OS when it arrives - I know the risks and I have questions to ask my supplier (OPTUS in Aus) so I can better evaluate my position. But here's a couple of Q's someone here might know:

1. If this update IS provided by my OEM - will the 2002 phone purchased now be able to have the .NET CF installed into it's ROM? Is that posssible from a HW point of view? Is it a firmware update?

2. The SM2002 being sold here now (arrived just this month I think - QTEK7070 sounds like it's actually the SPVe100 which is also the Tanager - i.e. just renamed phones for different markets - Is that correct or have I misunderstodd some subtleties?

thanks

Alan

From a HW point of view it should be posible to update the Tanager and Canary with the SM2003 software (See here (DK)). This update is proberly to come from the Phone vendor (Orange, Qtek), but its that they might not choose to make it. Althought there has been some roadmaps showing that the SPV will have SP2003 You'll never know if they release it for the Tanager/Canary too! (It would be a waste of money if they did'n if you ask me - they are already going to buy the license for the SPV2)

SP2002 will proberly not be able to handle .NET. and SPVe100 = Qtek 7070 = Tanager = SPVx

1: The SPV and Tanager are perfectly capable of running SP2003, this would be made available through a firmware update (in the same format as current updates).

2: The QTek7070/SPVe100/i-Mate/Smart Amazing Phone are all one and the same, the HTC Tanager model.

I have been told by Orange (at least) that they are very eager to get a SP2k3 firmware update made available for their HTC handsets....

Thanks Crispy,

I hope that since this hardware will be only 6 months or so old by the time 2003 comes out, they will see benefit in supplying updates...

You refer to Tanager/Canary.. why?

I know it's the Canary bootloader and the Tanager (or to be specific HTC Tanager reference design) - I suppose there are other design/bootloader combinations - it it always the way, to refer to these as the means of identifying the units?

Where can I see a definitive list of these untis?

Alan

Has anyone got any got any good intelligence as to when we might be seeing the UK OS 1.5 update, and subsequently OS 2003?

Ya, we all do! ... I wrote Tanager/Canary because both phones have (acoring to Orange anyway) the same driverdependant components, so any updates working on the tanager should also work on the Canary! :)

1.5 is fairly imminent i'd imagine.

SP2003 i can try to find out a more specific date...Orange are fairly tight lipped on the next gen of their SPV range though...

Slightly off-topic, how committed do you think Orange are to the Smartphone project?

The updates, the launch of the E-100, SPV2 etc. - these are all things that any other company would be plan with military precision and publicising left, right and centre.

Instead the reality is decidedly sloppy. A lot of if, buts, maybes and timeframes of months (not days) amiss.

I always get the impression that Orange's heart isn't in Smartphone. I wonder what the truth is?

I imagine they don't really wanna advertise SPV2 too much or nobody will buy the E-100.

Orange are VERY committed to the SmartPhone project, i've nothing but praise and admiration for what they've done for SmartPhone, i've never seen anything like it from a company of their size.

Without Orange there would probably not BE a SmartPhone TBH!

OK Paul, you sound like you are speaking with conviction about O's commitment.

I'm not trying to play Devil's Advocate here or get a rise - far from it.

From my perspective Orange have make a hash of marketing the SPV, product planning is rife with delays and question marks etc. Take the E-100 - supposed to be here in April, rumours afoot that O weren't going to take it.

Seriously, if Orange said that there would be no more Smartphones after the E-100, would you be that surprised?

I would, especially after the conference last week.

And you can believe what you will over rumours :)

(also when was it said the e100 would be released in April?)

Announced in February, remember getting March issue of T3 with massive front page article saying 'April 2003'.

I'd fall of my chair...

:)

Delays, yes, true, but the time to market for the SPV etc. from original planning is still quite remarkable!
