Guest schizoslayer Posted July 9, 2003 Report Posted July 9, 2003 I only got my SPV on saturday but I've already been hitting it for email quite heavily on the assumption that all I was using was my 2Meg GPRS bundle. Imagine my suprise when I check the call timers and I've used over 100 minutes on data calls (which are taken out of my free talktime minutes on orange) now I've set all my data connections to use GPRS in settings so why am I seeing these call charges at all? I can only assume my email is being sent and received over dialup WAP instead of GPRS and as a result is going to cost me more money. EDIT: Actually I just checked and yes checking my email is eating into my talktime. Only reason I bothered with GPRS was because I was sold it under the pretense that I only paid for data and not time. Bunch of liars. can anyone confirm if this is the case and how I can get around it (if at all) I've tried mutliple searches on the forum but if the answer is in there it's far deeper than I care to look on company time :) Incidently I also like how Orange specifically crippled PocketPC Outlook so it couldn't send picture attachments so you were forced to use their extortionate MMS system, vive Smart Explorer!

In settings - Data Connections, what is your Internet connection ? Also when downloading E-mail what it showing in the top right (next to bars). Two arrows=GSM data connection, small G=GPRS connection.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted July 9, 2003 Report Posted July 9, 2003 Depsite the fact you DO pay for data only, its still a dailup connection, like a voice connection. As such it is recorded in call timers as a data call, and has a timer associated with it. You are NOT charged for this, only the data you transfer. Also Orange have nothing to do with how OL turned out in SmartPhone OS, that was a decision on Microsofts part.
Guest schizoslayer Posted July 9, 2003 Report Posted July 9, 2003 In settings - Data Connections, what is your Internet connection ? It's Orange GPRS for the GPRS connection and the Wap connection. Also this time is eating into my talktime minutes as I just checked the remaining minutes on my plan on the orange site and I only have 24 (out of 200) left this month. I'm going to go to the local orange shop today anyway and see if they can shed some light on the mysterious disappearing talktime as well as get my charger replaced as it appears to be faulty. Is there anyway to find out how much data you've transferred via the GPRS connection by the way? I tried doing #123# but it just tells me it failed to retrieve the infomation.
Guest mark_g_james Posted July 9, 2003 Report Posted July 9, 2003 I've had my SPV for just over two weeks now. For the first day I set it up to check my email every 30 minutes, but overnight it must have gotten stuck (as the GPRS tends to once in a while) so imagine my horror when I checked the call timers to find I'd spent nearly 8 hours online  So hopefully it wasn't continually transmitting data during that time or I might be paying off the next bill for a while
Guest schizoslayer Posted July 9, 2003 Report Posted July 9, 2003 So hopefully it wasn't continually transmitting data during that time or I might be paying off the next bill for a while  Well unless you wer egetting a 30meg attachment or something silly AND the claim of only paying for the data transfered is true (I'm skeptical now but I suppose I have a right to be) then all it should have transmitted was the ocasional ping to the server to confirm the connection which shuldn't amount to much more than a few KB for 8 hours (probably not even that).
Guest schizoslayer Posted July 9, 2003 Report Posted July 9, 2003 Right after a quick jaunt to the Orange shop it appears that the missing talktime is due to the very much new nature of my contract, apparently when you start a new contract you won't receive all your talktime minutes straight away, yo uwon't get thos euntil you'v epaid the first monthly bill. I have been assured that it isn't the data calls eating into it. Dunno the cynical side of my brain is working now though guess I'll know when I see my first bill...
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted July 9, 2003 Report Posted July 9, 2003 I can assure you the GPRS sessions on my phnoe have not been eating into my free minutes....(assuming it is all configured properly, if you ~are~ using WAP it will use calltime minutes).
