Guest Pagemakers Posted July 9, 2003 Report Posted July 9, 2003 It was s stupid idea to call the Smartphone OS 2002 when it was released and it's even more stupid to release the new OS at the end of the year and call it 2003. It's out of date almost as soon as it hits the streets.
Guest Crispy Posted July 9, 2003 Report Posted July 9, 2003 Hehe, ya Microsoft has problem with dates! ... Windows XP was released in 2001 and its labeled "Windows 2002" ... Go figure!
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted July 9, 2003 Report Posted July 9, 2003 That's probably why it'll be called Windows Mobile for SmartPhone by then... :)
Guest Pagemakers Posted July 9, 2003 Report Posted July 9, 2003 Bet its called Windows Mobile for SmartPhone 2003! Now that's stupid!
Guest Posted July 9, 2003 Report Posted July 9, 2003 How about the one that kicked off this whole "year naming" thing? Windows 95, which we all waited for forever (anyone remember Windows 3.11?), supposed to start the year with a bang; and appeared in August. I remeber tales of old dears in PC World buying computers in December of that year for thier children; and being asked by the sales assistant "Do you want Windows 95?" with the reply being "No, there's not much point if it's only got a month left on it"!

I still have people telling me that they're running Windows96 or even Windows97. What else catches me out as someone people turn to for PC help is people thinking that WindowsME is the same as Windows2000. So, thinking that WindowsME, meaning Millenium Edition, and the Millenium is (allegedly) 2000, is actually Windows2000, confuses me and then them as I try and explain that they are actually different.

Trying to explain the differences between WindMill and 2000 isn't easy I agree! Generaly I say "ME is consumer and a bit pants, 2000 is corporate and good; you should buy Windows XP which gives the 'best' of both" (if you like Fisher-Price looking OSs). Another thing that amuses me is when people say "I've got XP" - it sounds like a tropical disease! :)
Guest Big Ron - No Longer a Mem Posted July 10, 2003 Report Posted July 10, 2003 You have to bear uin mind that Win95 was supposed to have been released not in August, but the previous April. (not 4 months earlier... 16 months earlier) back then the name probably sounded sexy... h I seem to recall that it was called "Chicago" until almost the last minute.

I've lost count of how many slipped shipping dates Win 95 had, you're right it was supposed to be out much earlier than August 95 - Microsoft had been promising a 'decent' OS for ages! (not that they really suceeded - anyone remember Mac heads saying "Windoze 95 = Mac '87"?).
Guest Hax Posted July 12, 2003 Report Posted July 12, 2003 It was s stupid idea to call the Smartphone OS 2002 when it was released and it's even more stupid to release the new OS at the end of the year and call it 2003. It's out of date almost as soon as it hits the streets. As we all know, the Smartphone OS is based on the Pocket PC OS. So, the 2002 is an indication of the technology base, not an indication of the release period...... Hax
Guest Pagemakers Posted July 13, 2003 Report Posted July 13, 2003 Well, that's a stupid marketing idea. I guess there is technology in there from 1998 as well so why not call it smartphone 1998? How many other products do you buy in 2003 that are called 2002? "Now that's what I call music 2002"? (most the tracks were put down in 2002) - er no The 2002 Oscars (When the films were made) - er no MTV Awards 2002 (When the music was recorded) - er no
