sender ID in sms

when you recieve an sms, is there a way the phone can show the name of the person sending the text from your contacts?

at the minute it just gives a number with +44 at the beginning even if you have this person in your contacts list. This can be very confusing unless you know all your numbers off by heart, can be hard to tell who the sms is from.
