"just bought a mio 8380"

What an happy guy you are :)

I suppose MS Smartphone softwares are binary compatible with ARM and Xscale processors.

Well, the code is compatible - if you have a problem, it's probably related to a missing library, or a software lock

It is the software lock, the error said the software need to be certificated.

I am here just to confirm that it is the software lock not gnuboy faulse.

I have tried orange spv unlock method ,cant work.

After erasing IPSM data ,before going into main page ,orange spv can be connected to pc,but 8380 can be only connected to pc after going into main page.

The Mio 8380 needs digital signature... too bad.

But I suppose it's due to the fact you bought it from CECT. I bet that 8380 sold in Hong Kong will be without digital signature

perhaps you have lucky, but I have called 8380 support phone, they said ,it is M$`s order that 8380 must have digital signature

The 8380 is only just out, I'm sure a method of unlocking it will be found in good time. You'll just need to show some patience for now.

The other option is to rush to www.surrealservices.co.uk and click the donate button :) I have $11US so far, when donations reach $500US I'll get a geotrust account and sign all my apps free.

Eiii? ... Why would M$ shoot themselfs in the foot like that?

yes, that sucks  perhaps you'll have more luck with the "old" unlock method ... what's the version of the bootloader/OS on these things btw ?

Guest wu_yang

i dont know whether 8380 has a bootloader ,when going into debug mode ,it has a program named upgrade tools 3.5 whicn can erase ipsm data ,upgrade flashrom from usb or sd/mmc card...etc

the os verison is smartphone 3.0.13101.0

Guest Arisme

oh ok, a whole different design, nice :)

think you will be able to dump your ROM ? it may speed up some "research"

Guest spacemonkey

Yep. it's a completely new beasty, just like the red-e. Same underlying OS but the extra apps and firmware bootloader stuff will all be totally different.

as i know ,in france there are some place which can write modified flashrom into orange spv to unlock spv

if they can write into spv ,then can also write into 8380

Guest sebset

Yes, I remember that some anonymous guys in France did this :). I know this is illegal however  ...but very interested way to unlock this new baby!

I hope they will help you if they read this post ;)

If somebody knows how/where it is possible to modify flashr** of 8***, please contact our friend by private message.

mmh seems a bit overkill to me ... are you sure they didn't use the bootloader to patch the ROM  ?

can you tell us exactly what the new bootloader can do ? If it can backup and restore the IPSM, you have a fairly good possibility to unlock it.

the program can update flashrom, microP,RF module from usb or sd/mmc card, print, clear BOD(i dont know what it is),write SN,and

dump image of IPSM,erase IPSM,but most interesting is that it can not restore IPSM

Guest Arisme

It'll probably restore the IPSM automatically if a card containing a backup is inserted ... you can try that

If it works I'd be interested to get a hand on this backup to see if the partitions are still organized as they were on the SPV (most probably because the driver is made by Intel, not HTC, but you never know)

In 8380 only mxipcold_smartfon_1.provxml and mxip_oem_5.provxml have "SecurityPolicy" section,not like spv`s mxip_oem_10.provxml

mxipcold_smartfon_1.provxml and mxip_oem_5.provxml are in /windows directory

in file explorer /windows and /IPSM are different directory,do the action of erasing IPSM just clear /IPSM data?

if so ,the actions of erasing and restore IPSM data can not affact the ""SecurityPolicy" files which are in /windows directory.

is this right?

the 8380 "SecurityPolicy" section

mxip_oem_5.provxml

mxipcold_smartfon_1.provxml

yes - the way the old method works is to edit these files to show:

Then you save the edited file on your desktop computer, do a hard reset (erase IPSM). When the phone boots up again it will rebuild the IPSM from ROM, copying settings from the windows folder. The old method of unlocking took advantage of an oversight in this process whereby you could gain an activesinc connection with the phone before it had read all the files from windows. So what you would do is copy your modified file back to windows as soon as possible afer boot, which would hopefully be before it was read - thereby your modifed file gets read to IPSM, and becomes the new security policy.

This flaw (?) was fixed in the windowsCE version that came in the first Swiss update.

So theoretically if you could get a copy of the old windowsCE (and just this part mind you) onto a SD card then you could load this onto your phone - remove the software lock and then restore your current windows CE version, making everything hunky dory.

Thats my understanding anyway - talk to Arisme, he's a lot more in the know than most of us :)

no, because these files are in the ROM. But the registry will be rebuilt using parameters from these files are Gorskar explained

Restoring an older CE may work, but it's tricky (mostly because HTC and Mitac have no reason to use the same internal FS (HTC notorious "Hilter QFS") for their backups. That's why I thought working on a new IPSM backup could be a neat and not dangerous idea, if it can be restored through the new bootloader (to patch the registry "offline" basically) - if the backup is not encrypted of course, which would be the first thing I'd do if I was designing the bootloader :)

Suggested course of action :

1) Test if the IPSM backup can be restored

2) If 1) dump it and upload the backup somewhere

some one told me that 8380 usb driver has a 600ms delay,so it seems that 8380 can only be connected to pc after going into main page

my usb driver file wceusbsh.sys has a version 1.02.102300.0

and in activesync 3.7 the verision of wceusbsh.sys is 1.02.102300.0 too

how about yours ?

I have tried dump the image of IPSM to my 32M mmc card, but it said that there were not enough space ,I must buy a new big mmc card to store the dump?

Guest Arisme

Wceusbsh is used on the PC side, its version probably won't matter much (I'm using Activesync 3.6) - anyway the timeout bug was fixed in the latest updates, we can bet it's fixed in the Mitac ROM too.

What's the IPSM capacity on the Mitac ? if it's 32 Mb then yes, you'll need a 64 Mb card to dump the IPSM fully, due to file system overhead.

Do you get somewhere a prompt asking you if you want to restore the IPSM, even if the backup was not completed ?
