Mitac to sell smartphones in Taiwan, HK next week

Chinmei Sung, DigiTimes.com, Taipei [Friday 11 July 2003]

Mitac International, which debuted its Mio 8380 smartphone in Taiwan last month, said it will begin selling the handset in Taiwan and Hong Kong on July 17.

The handset retails for NT$16,800 (about US$489) in Taiwan and will be available through 3C retail shops run by Synnex Technology International. In Hong Kong, the handset will be priced at HK$3,880 (about US$497). Beverley Pacific International, the sole distributor for Sony Ericsson handsets in Hong Kong, will handle distribution.

Initial shipments to Taiwan and Hong Kong are 500 and 1,500 units, respectively.

Mitac has been selling the same smartphone device, dubbed the CECT Mio 8380, in China since June 30. According to the company, shipments will reach 20,000 units as of the end of July. Its Chinese partners are Chinese Electronics Corporation Telecom (CECT) and China Mobile.

US$497

In Taiwan and Hong Kong the price is cheaper than in China with CECT!

Is it easy to order a product from Hong Kong to UK? (taxes, etc.)

ok, so can you get one of these things to the US, and will the phone run in an english mode? My spv has an option to change languages, i was just wondering about the mitac....

Chinese or english/chinese? I don't think they would put out an english language product in these markets. At least not a 100% english language... I've had such bad experience with a Chi/Eng P800 that I would not reccoment dual language smartphones unless you read BOTH languages

Lifestream said to me that its 8380 can run in Chinese or 100% English. However I don't know if it's a US English version... but I suppose it's more an International English one.

As I already wrote yesterday ("according to PPCW.Net sources in Taiwan it's expected to be released around the 15th this month" the Mitac Mio clamshell Smartphone 2002 will be released next week (17. July) in Taiwan and Hong Kong - but and this might be the most important (again according to PPCW.Net information) with Traditional and Simplified Chinese UI only (so beside Taiwan and Hong Kong are great locations and always worth to visit, no reason to fly to there to pick it up until your Chinese isn't fluent enough )

According to DigiTimes, the handset retail price is NT$16,800/HK$3,880 (about US$489/US$497). Initial shipments to Taiwan and Hong Kong are 500 and 1,500 units, which isn't that much...

However, the same device is already on sale in China as CECT Mio 8380 since June 30. According to the company, shipments will reach 20,000 units as of the end of July.

So was it released today? Can anyone answer the Englist UI (on an HK handset) question firsthand?

Thanks,

Not sure about a HK handset, but I know the Taiwan handset DOES have a US English rom.

It's perfect English at least in those phones sold in China. In fact, there is no Chinese smartphone 2002 OS at all. So don't doubt you will get a hybrid English smartphone. :-)
