Guest beavis82 Posted July 12, 2003 Report Posted July 12, 2003 Hi, I've got a strange problem with my SPV. I've tried searching the forums, but can't seem to find anything about this problem. I'm running my SPV on O2 in the UK. Recently a message has been popping up randomly in my Inbox. There doesn't seem to be any pattern as to when this message appears, and when this message arrives, the last one of these messages disappears. The message just contains three numbers which appear to be my three nearest area codes, without the first 0. The message doesn't appear to be an SMS, there is no 'From' field. When Viewing the message, this is what I see (I'll block out the area codes that appear in the message): INBOX ---------------------------------- Sent: 12/07/03 19:58:04 ---------------------------------- 1XXX 1XXX 1XXX Reply | Menu The reply button is greyed out. What are these messages? Any ideas how I can stop them? I'm getting one or two a day (although I've had 4 today) and occasionally get them in the middle of the night. I'd appreciate ANY thoughts you may have on this! Si
Guest Brody Posted July 13, 2003 Report Posted July 13, 2003 Thats a new one on me!! (a lot of help i was!) Not heard it discussed here before though, that doesn't mean that it asn't been though, anybody?
Guest beavis82 Posted July 13, 2003 Report Posted July 13, 2003 It is really strange. Maybe its because I'm using the phone on O2 and there are incompatibility issues? It's only been happening for the last few weeks, but it's really starting to annoy me now! s
Guest James Posted July 13, 2003 Report Posted July 13, 2003 our old phones at work did this.. very old ericsson phones. are you getting charged for them?
Guest beavis82 Posted July 14, 2003 Report Posted July 14, 2003 Not too sure if I'm getting charged for them as I haven't had a bill since they started. Why would I be charged for receiving these texts?! I'm worried now!! I've never signed up for a reverse-charge text service, ever! si
Guest James Posted July 14, 2003 Report Posted July 14, 2003 it just sounds like some sort of service?! have you spoke to orange? they should be able to tell if you are getting charged
Guest beavis82 Posted July 14, 2003 Report Posted July 14, 2003 I'm on O2. A bit worried about phoning them because they'll surely ask me what phone I've got, and I doubt they'd be too pleased to hear me say 'Orange SPV'. They'll probably just tell me that is the reason, and that I need a new phone :) If these are run-of-the-mill SMSes (that I might be getting charged for), why don't they have a 'From' field and why does the last one disappear when a new one comes through?! si
Guest James Posted July 14, 2003 Report Posted July 14, 2003 they wont care mate....... just phone them mate, if they are costing you money then you should know!
Guest beavis82 Posted July 14, 2003 Report Posted July 14, 2003 Ok I just called them and they haven't got the latest usage data in yet, but said if I called back tomorrow they'd have the information available. So I'll see what is said tomorrow! si
Guest DamianJauregui Posted July 14, 2003 Report Posted July 14, 2003 This is something that happens a lot on networks, the idea is that on some providers you can select Home zones where you get a reduced call cost. The home zones [area codes] are passed to the handset via the operator and then these can be used by the phone's internal call calculators [remember those?]. I always use to get it in London on O2, in Wales on One2One and across Germany, some parts of Switzerland, haven't seen it on my SPV yet, but also haven't taken it to Germany yet.
Guest beavis82 Posted July 14, 2003 Report Posted July 14, 2003 Bizarre - this has only recently started happening. I didn't know O2 used these 'home zone' things? Don't know if this makes any difference, but I've only noticed it happen when I'm in my area, not in any other areas. si
