Guest graeme2b Posted July 13, 2003 Report Posted July 13, 2003 dont think you can access the internet at High speeds but the New 3 Network sim cards work in my SPV and bring up a Triangle in the status bar at the top of the screen does anyone know what this means!!! Ps the sims don't normally work in other Phones ie Nokia 6100 etc
Guest ajb3000 Posted July 13, 2003 Report Posted July 13, 2003 The triangle means you are roaming on another network, not your home network.
Guest Brody Posted July 13, 2003 Report Posted July 13, 2003 So it works? (or just the "phone" side of things works?)
Guest Arisme Posted July 13, 2003 Report Posted July 13, 2003 yes it works, but as a phone on a 2G network
Guest Crispy Posted July 13, 2003 Report Posted July 13, 2003 Are there any advantages in using the 3G network?
Guest amo Posted July 13, 2003 Report Posted July 13, 2003 There is the bonus of getting great tarrifs without having to use a rubish fone (eg the NEC e606) thats about all i can think of
Guest morpheus2702 Posted July 13, 2003 Report Posted July 13, 2003 From what I know, 3G requires new circuitry in the phone to work. Would be interesting to know how far the current GPRS circuitry can be 'turbocharged'.

This will provide similar data speeds to 3G with a compatible handset.
Guest englishpunk Posted July 15, 2003 Report Posted July 15, 2003 Sorry, but that's not true, Orange are trialling UMTS, but UMTS is a 3G technology and will not work on 2G systems, the trials they are doing are for their 3G system network now to be launched mid 2004.

UMTS has nothing to do with 3G. It uses existing 2G network
Guest Matt Kirby Posted July 15, 2003 Report Posted July 15, 2003 I admit I don't know much about UMTS, but a quick http://www.google.co.uk>Google seems to suggest it is 3G. I do know that Orange have a 3G licence, and I assume that they are currently doing tests of the infrastructure required. [EDIT] Above link was to "UMTS" search on Google, but that smart link thing on the board inserted it's own link for Search (see, it's done it again!). [/EDIT]
Guest Matt Whitfield Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 The UMTS and WCDMA protocols are both examples of 3G technolgy implementations... EDGE can be bolted onto 2G infrastructure and GPRS requires a more significant upgrade to existing 2G infrastructure. 3G requires seperate network infrastructure.
