Guest sebset Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 I heard that Smartphone 2003 will let the user to turn on/off the digital signature protection before to run software. Is it true or not? To Neil [MS]: Can you give a clear answer? Thanks Sebset
Guest amo Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 My understanding was that the signature requirement of the software was set by the network carrier - in our case, Orange who decided to enable it. So this really does depend on the decision of the network carrier which launches the SP 2003 os phones.
Guest Arisme Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 Think I read somewhere that Smartphone 2003 will be smart and ask the user to confirm if we want to run unsigned apps ... without blocking the application (but what about API access ?)
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 SmartPhone2002 has two application signing "states", "ON" and "OFF", Orange chose to set these as "ON" on their handsets. SmartPhone2003 will have a third "PROMPT" state, similar to unsigned drivier installation in Windows XP. You will be able to install the applications, but by doing so agree to acccpt the concequences for any damage that may be incurred. When Orange release SP2003 they may chose to active this state. They could just as likely decide to keep it as ON or even change it to OFF though... :) API access, who knows...i'm not a developer This is the last i read on the subject (good few months back now), so it may have changed since then.
Guest Arisme Posted July 16, 2003 Report Posted July 16, 2003 would be consistent with MIDP 2.0 to set it to "prompt" :) they are going to have some smart security policies in MIDP 2.0, where all API are available to unsigned apps, even the "dangerous" ones (make a phone call, send a SMS, open a network connection), with different level restrictions (SMS must be confirmed every time one is sent, network accesses must be confirmed when the connection is open and can be valid for all the session) ... hope they'll get these good ideas for Smartphone 2003
Guest lazyjarl Posted July 21, 2003 Report Posted July 21, 2003 Hope that's true and I also hope my MIO 8380 can be upgraded to smartphone 2003 for free or at least at some reasonable cost.
Guest drblow Posted July 21, 2003 Report Posted July 21, 2003 Will we be able to upgrade the current SPV to this 2003??
Guest Gorskar Posted July 21, 2003 Report Posted July 21, 2003 The SPV could be upgraded to SP2003, we know that this is possible (saw a news item where someone had a play around with a tanager running the unreleased sp2003 not long ago), but whether a sp2003 update is ever released or not is down to Orange. Similarly for the Mitac I imagine.
